If we went to college, we want our kids to go to college. If we like sports, we want our kids to like sports. If we vote Democrat, of course we want our kids to vote Democrat.

She's saying that everyone wants their kids to be like them. Yes, many people want that, but the majority is not always right. Should kids be expected to mirror their parents? I don't think so.

She recognizes that in the article. She's admitting to feeling something that is uncomfortable, explaining her feeling, and then explaining how she gets past it.

It's kind of amusing, actually. Kids are going to rebel against whatever their parents stand for, right? So if mom and dad are square hetero boring people, then kiddo will be outrageously otherwise.

But if mom and dad are hip, or mom and mom are gay, guess what? Kiddo wants to join the GOP.

I actually saw this acted out in front of my eyes. The two moms were decent people, and tried to be fair in raising their daughter, but you never saw so much hetero acting-out in your life. Okay kiddo, you proved your point. You are an individual. Although you still are letting others define you, only in reverse.

Agree that it seems symptomatic of a bad parent. Just goes to show that gay people are just like straight people... sometimes they want to make their children fit the mold of the parents neatly even if it is a poor fit.

The top commenters on the article have the right of it even if the author doesn't appear to. I will quote one of them to agree:

I made the mistake of reading to the end, looking for the redeeming spin, development, insight that would make the logic somewhat above impossible.

Reading through the article to the end doesn't add much more than the title. The parent comes off as self-centered and harmful.
