Canada and the US are different countries, IM, with different economies and different approaches, and different social problems. This is not to say that I agree with the way tuition costs are so high in the US and how this can make higher education virtually inaccessible to some people. That certainly is a problem that needs fixing. But we can't really go on and apply what works in one country in another without first changing other things.

Do I agree with you that this system is flawed? I do, which scares me because you and I rarely if ever agree. :?
But the solution isn't as simple as dumping it all on the parents. Now, if you can come up with a more realistic solution, I'm willing to listen.

I don't like the system very much.

But I also like paying really low taxes, so I'm a bit torn now.

Washington started, in a manner, with the affordability act for community college.

Here's more on the White House and Higher Education, if you're interested.

If you took all of the money the US currently spends on pell grants, tax credits, administering student loans, etc, it'd add up to about $60-$70bn for federal financial aid. State universities and colleges/comm colleges currently receive $60-$70bn from tuition in students. So if you just shifted from spending money on financial aid to students and families (of which a lot goes to private universities), you could make tuition at state universities 100% free.

Of course pell grants, etc would disappear for private schools but imo making public schools free would force down costs at private schools. If UCLA or University of Michigan are completely free, Harvard is going to have to reconsider charging $50k a year.

No tax increase required.

Like the OP, I too live in the South and do not get America's obssession with football. Why isn'g basketball more popular, it was the only sport invented in America.

I also think we are a bit too patriotic.

I've never understood the obsession people have with NASCAR in the South in particular, nor do I see how it is considered a sport..

It all goes back to humanities obsession with death sports.

People don't watch NASCAR for the racing. They watch it for the opportune moment their chosen candidate dies in a fiery crash.

Of course, this arrangement works well with authoritarian leaders, other types of leaders might see themselves in a bit of a hassle.

It just sounds like exploitation of labour of some kind.

I don't know...

It helps kids learn about the workplace while they are still living at home, which may make it easier to transition into supporting themselves independently.

No shit. I lived in Boston for 6 years, and I still live in Massachusetts. I know about Red Sox Nation. Yankee is still not an insult if you're not specifically talking about baseball, and a lot of people still call themselves Yankees. My dad, who grew up around here and has always been a Sox fan, complains that the New York Yankees "aren't even real Yankees" because New York is not in New England.

If the Yankees had a rivalry with some team that wasn't in New England the same way they do with the Red Sox, that'd be different, but New Englanders have been called Yankees since before the baseball team existed.

A declaration of war is not an insult. Also, I think the term 'Yankee' applies to just the North East in general, (don't quote me on that) not just New England, which is part of the North East anyway.

As a Canadian, there are so many to chose from: the Pledge of Allegiance, the shitty healthcare system, the continuing usage of imperial, the lack of sanity from the politicians, your fanatical obsession with American "football," how you seem to have a "love it or leave it" attitude, the overt nationalism... I can go on and on and on and on, just like your suburbia. And Calgary, for that matter.
