Canada and the US are different countries, IM, with different economies and different approaches, and different social problems. This is not to say that I agree with the way tuition costs are so high in the US and how this can make higher education virtually inaccessible to some people. That certainly is a problem that needs fixing. But we can't really go on and apply what works in one country in another without first changing other things.

If you took all of the money the US currently spends on pell grants, tax credits, administering student loans, etc, it'd add up to about $60-$70bn for federal financial aid. State universities and colleges/comm colleges currently receive $60-$70bn from tuition in students. So if you just shifted from spending money on financial aid to students and families (of which a lot goes to private universities), you could make tuition at state universities 100% free.

Of course pell grants, etc would disappear for private schools but imo making public schools free would force down costs at private schools. If UCLA or University of Michigan are completely free, Harvard is going to have to reconsider charging $50k a year.

No tax increase required.

Except, these are not contractarian obligations. It is simply the parent telling them "okay you're coming to work with me". It's rather informal and non-contractarian because we're the kids, and we stay in the household anyways so they can just tell us not to go work any longer.

Of course, this arrangement works well with authoritarian leaders, other types of leaders might see themselves in a bit of a hassle.

No shit. I lived in Boston for 6 years, and I still live in Massachusetts. I know about Red Sox Nation. Yankee is still not an insult if you're not specifically talking about baseball, and a lot of people still call themselves Yankees. My dad, who grew up around here and has always been a Sox fan, complains that the New York Yankees "aren't even real Yankees" because New York is not in New England.

If the Yankees had a rivalry with some team that wasn't in New England the same way they do with the Red Sox, that'd be different, but New Englanders have been called Yankees since before the baseball team existed.

A declaration of war is not an insult. Also, I think the term 'Yankee' applies to just the North East in general, (don't quote me on that) not just New England, which is part of the North East anyway.
