Why should we place value on the lives of those guilty of capital crimes? Why should we support the rehabilitation of such individuals?

Some people can't and wont be rehabilitated. For smaller crimes sure, but as for murder or even mass murder? Prison for life please.

Because we aren't always right when someone is sentenced.

Stooping down to their level and killing them makes us just as barbaric as they are. We should rehabilitate them so that they can become productive members of society again.

What you are essentially saying is "eh, so what if we killed someone that is innocent? It's better to be safe than sorry." Do you not realize how repulsive you sound right now? It's disgusting!

So the man who rape, mutilate and kill children should just be rehabilitated?

Crime rates show that Norway is much better at solving crimes, though. They must be doing something right.

Can you elaborate as to under what circumstances the death penalty would be the proper course of action?

Not looking to debate, just want to hear what you're thinking.

There are times where there are people who commit such heinous crimes that they simply can't be allowed to live. There are some people who will never have guilt or remorse for their actions and so should receive the only punishment that will make them feel something approaching that even if its for their own selves. Then there are those who refuse to even try to reform and will go on to be a danger to their fellow prisoners and the people watching/protecting them and if they present a sufficient risk then they should in my opinion be removed.

He should obviously face criminal charges, but we shouldn't stoop down to his level and kill him.

No it's not! The death penalty is a disgusting and barbaric practice that should be banned forever. It has been abused too many times in human history.

Because laws represent certain cultural values, 'culture' can't usually be pointed at as a cause for more or less crime. Crime is really affected by government policy. And the policy if Norway to focus on rehabilitation seems to have effect. Correlation does not equal causation, of course, but it is quite telling that the US tops crime rates with their particular prison systems, and nations with rehabilitation as a prime objective usually have much lower crime rates. Homicide rate is halved, for example.

Well, and what if he just raped and mutilated children BUT without killing them; should we still say "Heeeey! He's rehabilitable! I'm pretty sure he won't do it again when he'll be free in 15 years. At least I hope so..."

Very often, such as by dictatorial regimes that still exist, and it still has the potential to be abused in democratic nations.

So we should continue to allow the death penalty simply because "life is disgusting"? This is not a good counterargument.
