Clash of Clans: Pay-to-win or Free-to-pay?

Postby Frenline Delpha » Mon Feb 16, 2015 11:07 am

I have been playing one of the best-selling apps of all time, one known as Clash of Clans.
I find it an interesting mix of strategy and free gameplay. While some building times are long, at least it works its way up there. It doesn't start out taking 7 days to build a level 1 defense. You can buy gems, but the game never forces you to do it. The only reason I bought gems was so I could get more builders and also support this, in my opinion, great game. The game is balanced, for the most point, and I still find myself enjoying it. So, what do you guys think?
I don't know how long I'll be back, but I just thought I'd stop in and say hi, at least.

I haven't played clash of clans but I've heard good things about it.

Unless maybe it was about the nature of free to play video games in general but this seems to be just about clash of clans.

Okay. Thank you. I wasn't quite sure where to put it.
It's more a discussion if Clash does free-to-play right or not.

Bah, its pretty much generic bull. The company just came out with Boom Beach, which is exactly the same thing.

Free to play is what you get when you buy a console game, you buy it and can play it whenever you want without charge or adverts.

Although I think those no initial purchase can be good if they strike a balance between the people who don't buy extras and the ones who do. There is defiantly some major changes happening in the gaming market.

As a player of Clash of Clans, the game is pay-to-win. It may not be as bad as games by say, Zygna, but paying to win is definitely an option.

Unless Kate Upton is in it, right? I mean really, Kate Upton's pretty hot.

personally I found it boring and derivative, albeit that I gave up while raising goblins

It may be that I'm a scrooge too and so wont pay for the extras but I do think the Freemium pricing strategy poses a risk to users on the same level as gambling addiction and may soon be ranked up alongside similar addictive behaviours in the DSM. Don't know if the game company is ethical but I'm sure they are happy to cash in

Video game addiction is already a recognized disorder. I think getting suckered into overspending by this sort of pricing scheme would fall under that.

One hobby of mine is to play these games and find out where the 'cut-off moment' is. That's where the people who aren't paying get bored from all the waiting and effort they have to sink into it, and the more gullible players start pouring money into it. In Clash of Clans, that's right about the moment where your headquarters turn black with towers and you can afford dark crystal walls.

 There's my daily giggle. Personally I just try and avoid those kind of games in the first place.

If it's F2P with anything beyond cosmetics that are purchasable with real world currency it's pay to win.

You can get better games by paying "more" for them.

It's called NS General. Here's how it works: create a thread and watch it unload, the more flame there is the higher your score.

Clash of Clans is unusually good for a 'free-to-play' game... in that you can play without paying and not get bored to death.

Freemium games are for addict materials and suckers. There's no initial cost to install and play, but every game in the genre require that you spend lots and lots of real money if you want to either play longer than a few minutes a day or if you want access to all the good play pieces in order to be considered a champion.

Why the fuck do people play this shit when they can just get an amazing strategy game for $10 on Steam, or at Target, or on GOG, or anywhere else?

Hardcore gamers are not biting onto these much. The primary freemium demographics are middle to late aged people who consider themselves casual players.

Honestly, the pay to win model is ruining gaming. And DLC.
