(Modern) Fahrenheit defines itself by the freezing of water at 32 and boiling of water at 212, with a 180 degree gap.
How is that at all a good idea?

Yep I'm still working out why a scale would start at 32, its not like we use sal ammoniac or icebergs on a daily basis

The original definition made even less sense than just using weird numbers for water.

0 - freezing point of ammonium chloride brine solution
32 - freezing point of pure water.
96 - approximate human body temperature.

What kind of stupid scale uses 3 different standards to define landmarks, and what kind of stupid scale makes 32 and 96 it's landmarks?

Because the person you were responding to was saying 30 C, you're either referring to a temperature the poster did not refer to, or a saying that 86 F is the freezing point of water.

But I thought the US Army used metric ..?

Several sources say Army and Air Force use metric and only the Navy doesn't. That's almost unbelievably retarded, so I really wouldn't be surprised if the sources are wrong.

I make an effort to use the metric system as much as possible despite living in the US. My family and I are originally from Hong Kong, so we use metric to compare temperatures between our hometown and where we live. In school, I use metric much more than customary since my science and math courses use metres, Celsius, litres, etc. I've even noticed everyday items in recent years have been slowly converting to the metric system (ie drinking bottles now come in 500mL/16.9oz as opposed to 16oz/473mL before). It's only a matter of time before the US realises how 18th-century the customary system is (itself a nonsensical deviant of the already-nonsensical Imperial system). After all, in what universe is 12 inches in a foot, three feet in a yard, and 1760 yards in a mile a sane idea?

The one that makes sense given the context, and the one that the people around me understand the best.

So in a country where all the rural roads are spaced at exactly one mile apart, I would use imperial.

1760 yards = 5280 feet. It is a abundant number and is divible by:

2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 20, 22, 24, 30, 32, 33, 40, 44, 48, 55, 60, 66, 80, 88, 96, 110, 120, 132, 160, 165, 176, 220, 240, 264, 330, 352, 440, 480, 528, 660, 880, 1056, 1320, 1760, and 2640

making it very useful to parse allotments for the surveyors who charted what became the the US and Canada.

Personally, my favorite measurement is the smoot (67 inches or 70.180 cm) used for bridgespans. It is so ironic that such an arbitrary measure would be based on a person who would later become chairman of the American National Standards Institute and then the president of the International Organization for Standardization. Guilty conscience, or karmic retribution? :D

As a kid i thought it would be cool to make a standard based on pi, e, and as many physical constants as possible divible by as many prime numbers as possible, but soon realized how impractical it was.

That's a poor comparison.

Marine biology won't help most of us in our daily lives, or in our work. A measuring system, however, is something we use very often, and if you were to go to, well, any country that isn't the US or Burma, then you'd have to use metric at some point or another.

Unless you want to spend your whole life in the US, in which case, there's be no need to.

Depends what you want to do. In many cases, fractions are better because they're more exact. If you want to conceive how big or small something is decimals are far superior. Precentages are obsolete due to decimals.

Metric is far easier to calculate with.
Less relevant, I think it would be fun if the weather gave temperatures in kelvins.
