That's because you've never been taught any other form of measurement, and never gone out of your way to learn on your own.

It isn't very difficult. One could easily learn the main units of length and volume in under thirty minutes.

Metric, by a long shot.

After all, which is easier?

1. Water boils at 100 degrees and freezes at 0 degrees.
2. Water boils at 212 degrees and freezes at 32.

I know that there was a rationale behind the Fahrenheit scale (i.e. to allow people to avoid negative temperatures), but if you ask me, it's actually easier to go into negative than to use Fahrenheit. This coming from someone who spent a year in America.

I'm currently employed in survey, so I have the unique (and unenviable) experience of having to deal with both metric and a backwards traditional system on a daily basis. This is one of those things that makes me just wish we'd converted to metric a lot sooner. There are farms that haven't been surveyed in nearly a century that are still measured by the morgen. And because people from generation to generation are lazy, most of the tax maps in certain areas continue to reflect it.

Occasionally I have to do the tax office's job for them and spend a day on conversions before we can even start the field work. Our instruments don't recognise eighteenth century Dutchares.

Why would I go out of my way to learn a measurement my country doesn't use?

So you couldn't understand there are 1,000 metres in a kilometre?

I get that much about the metric system, but that's where it ends.

It'd take decades. The UK began converting decades ago, and still hasn't finished entirely.

Quite so. RSA didn't start until the 1970s, and as I've said we still have to be familiar with both metric and morgen on a daily basis.

Everything else. Its unnecessary to learn a system I'll never use, because even if globalization changes the system in the USA, I'll still use inches, feet, yards, and miles.

Good luck trying to cut yourself off of the rest of the world then. Especially with China's growing economy, you're gonna need it. :)

As I said, cosmopolitanism and globalisation is inevitable. Even many American scientists use metric.

So unless you want to put yourself at odds with the rest of the world, then… yeah.

What do you mean "everything else"?
All the units in SI are derived of 7 base units. You probably won't need to know the Candela, and most people substitute Kelvin for Celsius. So basically, 6 units to learn.
All the other units are derivatives there-of, and are self-explanatory (m^3 as a unit of volume is self-explanatory, is it not?) unless they're given in their named form - the named ones are generally already used by generally Americans already anyway, so it doesn't matter (Newton, Volt - you're familiar with those, right?).

Even if the US did switch over, you wouldn't go with it? That's just being stubborn.

US customary units are defined based on SI units, by the way.

You're misinterpreting the statement "I am a citizen… of the world."

It's not saying that Earth is a government, but that it is globalised. And when it is globalised, the need to use an internationally recognised system comes along with it.
