What is your preferred system of measurement?

Postby Glorious KASSRD » Sat Feb 07, 2015 1:04 am

As long as there has been civilization, there have been systems of measurement for distance, size, and temperature. Such systems are needed for complex mathematics and building, among many uses. In older days, there were dozens or hundreds of systems used by individual groups and areas.
Nowadays, there are significantly less systems of measurement used. There are only three main systems of measure for size, distance, and volume used today, these being Metric, imperial, and Customary. The majority of the world uses the Metric system, while the U.S. and Liberia use Customary. The Imperial system is used mainly in common situations and by Myanmar.
My question for you, NationStates, is what if your preferred System of measurement, and why? Which do you use in your daily life, or do you use multiple? Which system is superior? Should there be separate systems for common life and science?
I personally prefer the Customary system, mainly because I grew up with it, and am more smilie with it. I recognize that the Metric system is better for science, but I think the Customary system is easier for common situations. I think that the Metric and Customary systems are each better in their own area, but as I run into situations where the Customary is superior more, I support it.

I use all of them, though I think we should convert to metric for efficiency.

I rock the fuck out of the Imperial system measuring lengths and shit.
Consequently, I am a savant of fractions in comparison to people from metric-using countries. Take THAT decimal system of measurement! You're bizarre power of powers has no power HERE! 'Merica, fuck yeah.

I prefer the metric system. It makes more sense in how it measures its measurements.

Mostly metric system except for length and height, then I use Imperial feet and inches but I don't use yards, but when talking about large distances I still use Metric Kilometres.

e.g: "Sam is about 6' tall but it is 4kms to the city."
I am Something-Teen living Somewhere in Canberra, Australia's capital. Social Justice Warriors will say that I am "Straight White Cis Male Scum". Not stupid people will say that I am a "Fascist Arsehole". My friends and family will say that I am "A little extreme and callous sometimes".
Pro: Capital Punishment, Gun Control, Equality, Corporations under the State, Fascism
Anti: Democracy, Social Justice, Feminism, Hate Groups, Tony Abbott, Free Market, Libertarianism, Communism

This nation does represent my beliefs and opinions. Deal with it.

Metric. I am, in fact, pretty lost with other systems (except those bits relevant to inches, I know an inch is 2.54 centimetres). However, this is far more familiarity than the idiots whose understanding of 6' is "tall". I am more like 6'7" or 6'8" (i.e. obviously more than 6' tall) and the number of times I hear, "Are you six foot?" *shakes head*

The Metric system is a plot by Liberal Communist Anti-American immigrants (it was created by the French!) to turn the greatest nation on Earth into a European socialist hellhole.

America is the only nation to have put a man on the moon, so obviously our system is better!

It makes sense too. Unlike basing your units on water like a nerd, the units are based on measurements of freedom, with 1 inch = Freedoms in commie land, 1 foot= Freedoms in Europe who is jealous and 1 mile = ONLY 1/100000000000000 OF THE AMOUNT OF FREEDOM IN AMERICA!

The UK uses imperial for distances: motorway and other road signs are posted in yards and miles. We also use imperial for height and weight, saying someone is 6' or 11 stone (the U.S. uses pounds rather than stone but there's 14 lbs to a stone). I work in trade retail and likewise we use imperial measurements for selling by length, weight, etc.

However, in school, we're taught metric. Furthermore, whilst I say we sell things by imperial weight, actually, we seek things by equivalent imperial weight as the legal and official weight must by law be stated in metric.

Personally, it depends. I prefer to use imperial day to day but I also have to convert systems on a daily basis so I don't mind metric. I would prefer we keep the current dual system.

It may seem an overstatement but imperial system is part of our culture and history. It may not be the most uniform system but that makes it endearing to me. I don't abandon custom for convenience. Metric is still handy to have but, for me, it's secondary to imperial.

Imperial. I'll recognize Metric's efficiency for scientific and military purposes, but Imperial has never done me any wrong in my casual life. Besides, who wins in a sweet name contest? Definitely Imperial.

Customary. It's the system I learned, and I don't need to go back to school just to learn another way of saying the same thing. I also get a kick out of its near-exclusivity. The fact that it isn't what the rest of the world is doing is one of the reasons I like it. I hate feeling like part of a mass of averageness.

It's a bit of a pain to Google conversions when talking to people from other places online, but meh.
