No wonder there's a running gag about you being ancient.

Perhaps there aren't many debate forums which are so easy to register on and have an age as low as 13 to start.

That wouldn't really explain the bulge at 15 or 16 years though. It's not just this thread, every age poll on General has shown more mid-teens than early-teens.

So maybe it's the game (or games, there being more than one way to 'play Nationstates') which attracts early teens, but doesn't entirely captivate them. How much better the world would be if I called the shots, this is great, oh wait. There are all these other players trying to rule the world, and they have more practice than I do. I'll just chill out for a while in one of these "discussion" forums.

And they get stuck on the forums, like mice in a glue trap. Stuck here until they finally knaw their own leg off to escape.

If I don't have a leg to chew off because I'm a virus and viruses don't have legs, does that mean I can never escape?

You're a virus. You trick cells of other organisms into producing viruses EXACTLY LIKE YOURSELF.

Your children are yourself, exactly, precisely, indistinguishably LIKE YOURSELF. They are you. You are legion. You are potentially immortal.

Now get off my damn glue trap, you whippersnapper!

Well, most of my children are copies of myself... Then there are the ones that are hideously mutated because I made a typo. You are lucky that doesn't happen to you when you make a typo.

Why wouldn't there be? And seriously, if you've ever read Arch's posts, it shouldn't be a surprise. It would be exceedingly difficult for anyone, even someone very dedicated to study and in possession of a working brain, to become that knowledgeable and acquire that many academic credentials before the age of 40.

What are you talking about?

The Archregimancy. He is a mod, he posts very detailed explanations of historical and anthropological things when a thread catches his interest, and he has a bajillion academic credentials. Even if he never came to this thread to tell us he is older than 41, it would not be difficult to guess. Younger posters can be intelligent and they can have mature writing styles, but they still won't have the sheer volume of knowledge or the connections in the academic world that Arch has.

If you aren't familiar with his posts, you should keep an eye out for them because they are much more interesting and informative than the usual, "Let's torture rapists to death! It's a deterrent!" or, "ZOMG!!!1! WHAT ABOUT THE RIGHTS OF THE FETUS???" or whatever that a lot of people post.

The other over 40 posters are not quite as obvious, but a few of them always turn up whenever we have threads asking about people's age.

You're only 13? You're quite mature and intelligent for your age.

I find that the majority of younger people on ns are typically mature for their age. I know a few 12 year olds from my region and usually you'd never guess.

I actually read once that people back then often lived to their 40s and 50s, but the reason the average lifespan was so low is that there were a lot of dead babies.

Age Poll, February 2015

Postby AiliailiA » Fri Feb 06, 2015 7:34 am

It's my once-every-five-months poll of Generalite poster ages. Except ...

Previous and planned age polls:
  • December 2011 (done)
  • June-July 2012 (done)
  • December 2012 (done)
  • May 2013 (over-run by Bolden's thread)
  • October 2013 (done)
  • March 2014 done
  • August 2014 done
  • January 2015 oops
  • June 2015
  • November 2015
  • April 2016
  • September 2016
  • February 2017

I forgot to do it in January. I was really busy mowing the lawn, wrestling mentally with a poorly chosen New Year's Resolution, and dealing with an ingrown toenail. Or something. Anyway, I forgot.

Usual terms:

  • The poll will run for two weeks. If your birthday is in the range Feb 6 to Feb 21 (from when the poll starts and when it ends) then vote whichever option you prefer.
  • If you post an age in the thread, make sure you also vote in the poll. If you post an age and DON'T vote, your entry will cancel out in the bar graph I make.
  • I make bar graphs of the estimated number of posters of each year of age, and edit those into this post (the Original Post). The estimates are more accurate if many posters state their age in years. There is no need to state an exact birthday, though of course you can if you just want everyone to know Facebook style.
  • For some idea of what my bar graphs will look like, see the previous Age Poll threads linked above. Note the conspicuous lack of rubber chickens.

I promise rubber chickens this time. I really really sincerely promise them. Ask and ye shall receive.

Well mine is on the 11th so there is a nice little buffer between it and Christmas. Though i usually just ask for money on my birthday, it does me.

Hmm. I was probably wrong about that. Early January would be the worst time to have a birthday.

No.

Yes!

If they want to kiss your cheek then let them. Rub your face on them, like you're a cat. If their face gets horribly infected with Tasmanian Devil Cancer, that's their own damn fault.
