Ideas for a post-apocalyptic world

Hello fellow denizens of Nationstates, this thread will be a discussion in order to help me come up with good ideas for weapons and the like in a post apocalyptic world for one of more than a dozen novels that I have started to write. the world itself will be essentially a cross between fallout and Rage with some of my own ideas thrown in. if this is not where it is supposed to be or if this sort of thread is frowned upon tell me and I shall take it down or whatever needs to be done, be aware that I may or may not comply right away seeing as how my access to the interwebs is intermittent at best.
EDIT: below there will be rough information about the world and the technology, beings, and Items contained within.
The world: this story will take place about a hundred years in the future, in a post apocalyptic America.
The people: the vast majority of Americas population will be in vaults similar to those in Fallout. All of the original people who were sent into the vaults had nanotech within them. the Nanobots will be carried down through the peoples bloodlines to there descendants. the purpose of the Nanobots are to keep the inhabitants healthy. they are also the key to operating the more advanced weaponry and armor left behind in the Armory Vaults.
The Vaults: the vaults in my world will be substantially larger than those featured in fallout. there will be the community vaults which will house the people and the food, water, and energy sources. then their will be vaults which have/had a minimal amount of human occupants, these vaults will hold the guns and other militaristic devices for the vaults to take back their regions when the world can support them.
The Characters: so far I have Only thought up two definite characters, the protagonist and the antagonist.
Protagonist: he will be booted from the vault early on in the novel after I describe the events that caused the world to be how it is, he will be a practical joker and the event that gets him booted from the vault will be one of the more important members of the vaults is killed in what appears to be a joke gone wrong. He will then be Exiled into the wasteland.
I can think up what I want to happen but my character development and other things may be lacking as I am not much of a people person and don't know how an actual person would most likely react in certain situations.

That's terrible advice. It's better to get the practice novels out of the way early.

True, though Fallout is probably far from being the best representation of a post-nuclear war environment.

Yeah with alternate timelines, aliens, towns full of kids, etc.

the world will take influences from both RAGE and Fallout, however the majority of the world will largely be of my own creation. it will be post apocalyptic and there will be certain items and the like that are in the worlds depicted on those games that I rather like and shall be using as a blueprint for similar items in the world.

Right well in that case you really need to work on your literary abilities.

You're talking a lot about the world but not much about characters. Have you got any characters in mind?

I'm just throwing this in but I think the most essential element of post-apocalyptic fiction is the effect of the catastrophe on human psychology. If technology is more advanced than it was before the event, it won't be quite post-apocalyptic.
