Having it both ways involves taking the faith elements of it as conceptual rather than factual. A lot of people try to lump people like me and the others with the '6000 year old Earth' inbreds. Do we know how exactly God created the infinite mass that would later expand in a cataclysmic conflict of matter and antimatter, resulting billions of years later into some guy sitting next to a computer? No, and we don't pretend to know. That's why it's faith. We only know for certainty that God created it and had a guiding hand in the later developments it would foster. None of us dispute dinosaurs, missing links, or any of the rest of it as far as science can prove. We're also not dense enough to say that scientific knowledge at this instant in time is the sum total of all human experience and everything else is God, end of story. We know the story can change, and we're fine with that. It's awfully arrogant to say that we as mortals know for a verbatim fact what's in God's mind, and I don't think you could find even the most firebrand evangelical who would say he could dictate what the Divine Plan is.
