Yes. A tragic event. Funny how we Australians celebrate a loss...

Up until a few years ago, I would have pointed out that we commemorate it, rather than celebrate it. Unfortunately, it has been hijacked by jingoistic bogans and all solemnity appears to have been lost.

In Australia, we have two states that care about rugby league, four states that care about Australian Rules football, and exactly zero states that care about rugby union.

And Britain is controlled by the monarch of Belize. Therefore, we are all Belizean puppets. Long live the Belizean Empire!

Oh, and happy national day to our brethren down under. Together we will unite the world under the Imperial Throne of Belize.

I know, and that is why we should not celebrate it.

Would you also celebrate the Holocaust, just because it happened? No, you wouldn't. Just because a historical event occurred, does not mean you should celebrate it, especially if it is a massive human rights violation and crime against humanity.

That's a ridiculous comparison. Besides, double standards if any Americans point that out btw. It's not any different from any other imperialism, and to blame it soley on Australia and to lay no blame, that should be equally shared, with Britain is a very narrow view of what happened.
Dazchan wrote:
Ardoki wrote:Oh yeah, it's Australia Day today. I had forgotten since I don't celebrate it.

In my opinion. Australia Day is a racist, colonialist and imperialist holiday. It celebrates the British invasion of Australia, and the mass persecution and mistreatment of the Indigenous Australians. I cannot celebrate a thing like that.

Yeah, Aboriginals tend to find the date offensive, referring to the holiday as Invasion Day. My main issue with Australia Day is that January 26 is irrelevant to the history of 5/6 of the country. Unfortunately, with the date of the founding of Australia being January 1, there aren't a lot of dates that would work.

We could go with December 20, Menzies' Brithday 8)

Oh hell no. Not bloody Menzies; let's not even go there.

Hyfling wrote:All that really happened on Australia Day was the arrival of the First Fleet. The actual persecution and slaughter didn't happen until a few years later, initially, the Europeans and Aboriginals got along quite well.

If the First Fleet (or any other fleet) never arrived, there would not have been the genocide and persecution.

But let's be realistic, at one point or another, someone was going to come along and the same stuff was going to happen. I mean, it's pretty bloody hard to go to an Imperialistic Europe and say, oh yeah, let's leave that little place Australia alone and never colonise it.
