It's like: They kidnap girls for sex slavery, have religious wars that displace millions, have tribal wars that end in genocide, and they teargas some children over a playground dispute.

That's a pretty major thing in Kenya. Africa isn't some homogenous blob of terrible atrocities.

Also, though I lack firsthand knowledge, I trust your opinion here (that it's a pretty major thing) and believe that it should be repeated. I also don't think there's anywhere in the world where teargas being used against children isn't a big deal.

Given how small the amount of gas contained in that thing is I wonder what the point of making you cry after you've been shot is.

IIRC, the point was to disperse organisers and leaders in riots and protests.

You identify people who look like they're in charge, give them a close-by warning shot and they get CS'd as a bonus.

It just seems as though you're lumping Kenya into the broader pool of African instability and atrocity simply because it's a country in Africa, without really considering whether that's a fair standard to hold it to as an individual country. Kenya has had unrest, certainly, but it's a rapidly developing country with an increasingly politically aware and active population. They have a right to hold their government to a higher standard than "not being like the other African countries". When they (or we in the West) hear of something like this, it's much more productive to be concerned and hope for an improvement than breathe a sigh of relief that at least they aren't committing genocide.

It's sub-saharan africa, being teargassed is the least of your concerns. While this is in no way excusable the governments can't be blamed for cracking down hard. I wish Nigeria would grow some balls even if that means they teargas kids

I'm not sure how you can compare the situation in Nigeria to this incident in Kenya. There's definitely a huge difference between teargassing some children who are protesting the replacement of their playground by a parking lot and a government losing a battle against militant groups that are massacring entire communities.

I'm also not sure how you think teargassing children would help Nigeria fight against said militant groups.

So, growing some balls means that one must tear gas a bunch of six year olds who protest about the closure of a playground? Right....

And I was happy to be proven wrong. I mean think about it. The fact that not only do people get outraged when someone throws CS at children (as opposed to say cutting them up into pieces or grabbing them by their wee legs and slamming their brains out against a tree) but that the children felt free enough to actually protest the government (not that it's a good thing, but you can't have them all) speaks something.

When they (or we in the West) hear of something like this, it's much more productive to be concerned and hope for an improvement than breathe a sigh of relief that at least they aren't committing genocide.

More likely the point was to shoot people dead and then claim it was an accidental death while using cs gas to disperse a riot.

Rounds intended to be used with such clandestine purpose seem an odd thing to put as museum pieces.

That's the trick. You put things up for everyone to see and that makes you look blameless whilst making the truth sound like a conspiracy theory.

The Kenyan government cracks down hard on everything, which leads to bad things like teargassed kids.
THe Nigerian government just sits back and asks people nicely to behave, which leads to Boko Haram

As an African, I am incredibly disappointed at how the police have handled this issue. While I do support strict discipline, as most I know do, I do not believe teargasing children, some who were as young as 6 is a good thing. In addition to this, it points a bad image to a government that is actually trying to do good, despite me having some issues with the government. To but it simply, its a shitty way of handling this, and as a Kenyan politican said, someone should be held responsibl

What do you think NSG?

Then surely you know just as well as I do that this shyte happens in places like Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso all the time. Sometimes the students aren't so fortunate and get a bullet for their troubles instead.

So, uh... Is this another one of those threads where everyone is supposed to feel outraged and circle-jerk in agreement of how injust and terrible the described incident is?

Because if it is, I'm probably going to say something mean and contrary just to contradict the majority.

But than how would you demolish their playground to build a parking lot? You can't well do it with them in the way. At least not in a way that does less harm to them than teargas.
