Grammer Nazism

Postby The Republic of Lanos » Thu Jan 14, 2010 8:43 pm

So ok, i get it. You post to point out typos. But to the point where a thread gets derailed because you guys wanted to show yourselves in your true colors?

What i ask is that every grammer nazi please stop spamming the fuck out of threads that have grammer issues (titles count) and move along with the flow of the topic.

Is that possible?

That's "grammar". And the Union generally stays in Forum 7.

Links? One of the mods (I believe it was Reppy) told us to not to post anywhere but Forum 7, so we didn't. Have any proof?

No. If you can't manage to dignify your opinion with the spelling, punctuation, and grammar needed to get it across most effectively, I'm not going to dignify it with a response. Other than to point out your spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors, of course.

Fix'd. :p

But I'm mostly a spelling-capitalization Nazi, and I can tell you that if I see you misspelling and not capitalizing, your point slowly becomes irrelevant.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

Fixed.. added a few notes (just a few... there are others). In short... anyone who you think has been absurdly precise probably has not actually been that hard on you, or others. The english language has many obscure rules; the enforcement of which would render most common sentences nigh unreadable.

Some people just would like you to communicate with a bit of clarity and intelligence. That means (for the most part) spell things correctly, use punctuation, and capitalize things that you are supposed to capitalize.

What most people ask is that people learn to use correct spelling and grammar so people's points are easier to understand and people seem more intelligent. I'm much more likely to discount people's arguments if they show consistently bad spelling and grammar, especially if they don't make the slightest attempt.

What I ask is that every misspeller and grammatical terrorist take measures to correct their misdeeds.

Is that possible?

I don't mind the odd typo or grammatical short cut but, if a post is riddled with errors, I stop reading it.

Edit: I changed something about this post, but didn't fix the tense error in the third paragraph. I wonder if anyone notices how it is unlike my other posts to date ... ?

You know what pisses me off? It's when someone makes an error, and calls it a typo.

If you read someone else’s post and it refers to the country Austria, then you reply saying Australia to refer to that county, that’s an error of comprehension, not a “typo.”

If you write “acceptable” when you mean “unacceptable” that's an error of expression, and while it should be let pass (if there's enough context to show it as an error rather than the antithesis of what was meant) it is not a god-damn typo. It’s the writing of someone who doesn’t read their own post ... and if even they don’t care what it means why the hell should anyone else?

Thsi is a typo.
Ths is a typo.
Chewbacca is not a typo.

I used to make it a point to make grammer errors in every paper of one professor with particularrly grammer nazi tendencies.

then ti came time to write my personal statement for law school. I very nicely asked the grammar Nazi professor to check my paper.

This thread being so boring, perhaps you can tell me: does your name mean "The bleating sheep" or "The bleating of sheep" or "The sheep's bleat" ... or something else ?

I can't but help correct errors when I quote someone else, I'll actually edit their post within the quotes.

Yes, that could be possible. It's just that I don't want to stop. You see, I try to write a decent English here so people can understand easily what I trying to say. Your disregard of proper grammar, instead, is a lack of manners, expecially to non-native speakers like I am, who have to work back through errors, jargon, and references to weird accents to understand what's being said.

See the bolds; also there's an error in the title, and the second and third clauses should really be rewritten a bit, as one should never begin a period with "but".

Oh, I forgot. I'd really like the use of "Grammar Fascist" (due to my nationality) or "Grammar Lavrentyj Berja" (due to my political alignment).

Yes, we are. However, although everyone makes mistakes once in a while, posts like

"yes i do belive but they r evil in my eyes, one time when i went joging alone around 6pm i saw this black figure with glowing red eyes long tail that looks like a snakes, a head of a cat and really wierd feet similar to elephant but a lot smaller and it had like these little sharp bumps on it's back, when it saw me it stop and stared at me for about aprox 3min, it continued to run then it disipeird in to dust, that was the most scariest time of my life and i am a christian so i belive that was a sign of satin."

just makes me want to cry.
