you don't need to look that far south or east to see why your attitude may not be as good idea as you think it is

or how about you people announce independence from the South East?
Yeah, that would be nice. for both of us.
you waste less of our taxes and we don't control your useless resources and laws

How about no? Yeah I'm gonna go with no. We'll take your taxes thanks, even the relatively paltry amount we're given comparatively. It's less than we're owed after centuries worth of careful funneling of everything into London to our detriment but we can fix that in the future. You're never going to get your wish of not having to deal with us which is unfortunate for you but rest assured I will take no small amount of pleasure knowing that's the case. In fact if Labour win the next election I may very well get my wish! And you'll see the very opposite of yours coming true, isn't that nice.

no problem
in turn we will make sure that us in the home counties rush to elect conservatives/UKIP so we can privatize every single aspect of your region and cut back the police force to bicycles

Its a post-imperialist country that sees its power fading away. However, it's a nice nation with lots of nice people.

Shouldn't it be the other way around, with "nation" having the negative, imperialist connotations and "country" having the positive "nice people" connotations?

No. A nation is a people, a country is the sum of State institutions and the land and people it has jurisdiction over.
