I was a heavy cocaine user for 20 years and Scientology saved my life.

Is it true that Scientology has solicited and in many cases received acquiescence from members to sign a contract waiving their right to seek legal recourse for abusive actions by the church, and if so, do you consider this conscienable?

While I'm personally do not agree with the scientologist philosophy, I am glad you were able to find something that convinced you to stop your cocaine habit.
Now, I'm going to be a bit critical here, but the reason I don't believe the scientologist philosophy is because of their stance against prescription drugs. I believe that with correct administration, they can be very helpful and in some cases life saving. That's not to say alternative treatments don't exist, but medication is certainly still a valid treatment method in my (and the medical community's) opinion.

I heard the Church copyrighted Scientology. Sounds odd for a religion to copyright its beliefs to stop outside adherance.

Look, if you want the mods to leave the thread alone (You are closer to a decent OP now, at least), you may want to elaborate upon what you perceive as being the unfair or unrealistic depictions of Scientology in the media and books. You may further want to invite others to ask you questions with the expectation of receiving an answer, if you really want to clear up "misconceptions." Remember, NSG is about debate AND discussion, either one will do. But posting blog like blurps saying that you want to get together with other scientologists or "why is scientology being suppressed on NSG?" won't help.

Once, I heard this story about a guy who had schizophrenia in a Scientologist family. His mother would not let him get meds. One day when he was all whacked out, he got out of the shower and stabbed his mother about 75 times. I could be wrong about the number of stabs, but...yeah.

No, it is a device prominently displayed in all their centers and information stands - which in essence measues skin resistance in a rather inferior manner, and is purposefully designed to let the meter fluctuate a bit. It has no value, nor do the readings mean anything.

If it is all for show, I would be interested in scientology for the interesting use of psychology that would imply. But I fear they take it seriously and ascribe some meaning to the thing.

Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

So perhaps you would like to explain where all the data and statements about Scientology charging you an assload to "treat" you comes from.

I personally like how the "Church" of scientology is either a business or a religion depending on what benefits them more in the country they are in.

Exactly, they're just a business masquerading as a religion so they can get tax-exempt status and brainwash their customers followers...actually it's quite smart, maybe I should start my own church.

From a purely theological perspective, one of the things I find curious about Scientology is that most modern belief systems can't wait to tell you the 'good news' about their revelation from the very beginning. It would be hard to imagine converts to Christianity, Islam, or Buddhism (taking just three examples) converting without knowing from the beginning that Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins / Allah is the One True God and Mohammed [PBUH] is His Prophet / a negation of being and an end to suffering awaits those who achieve enlightenment; except for certain fringe groups, paying large sums of cash for the privilege of being told this is rarely a requirement.

Scientology, however, demands that you spend years in the organisation and spend vast sums of cash before you can achieve the inner rank of Operating Thetan and discover the 'revealed truths'. I find that .... odd.

But perhaps I'm being cynical.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone here know what the cumulative costs of being audited to Clear level are?
