Strangest Meat You've Eaten

Postby The Alexanderians » Tue Jan 06, 2015 2:58 am

There is a thread on favorite meats, so it made me think of what the strangest meat I've ever eaten.

*"Strange" is a matter of perspective, keep that in mind.

*You can mention more than one meat

*Describe the taste, if you liked it, if you knew what it was when you ate it, if you'd be willing to eat it again, is it a normal part of your cuisine where you're from, etc.

*Don't do "hit and run posting", I expect more than one sentence posts people. The Admins don't like spam and I don't want this thread to be deemed as such and have the admins come down on it like the fist of an angry god.

I've tried tarantula ( I felt bad afterwards cause I find hairy spiders cute). It was cooking on a BBQ so it was crunchy and I can't really say that it tasted too different from regular BBQ...probably cause I covered it in a ton of spices and sauces. I knew exactly what it was at the time. I'd be willing to eat it again. It's not even close to what many people here consider food.

I've also tried grubs. It was raw and it tasted like an odd kind of wax candy. It was during survival training so the point was to see if I could use it as a source of food so yeah I'd eat it again. Again, not even close to normal food where I'm from.

I've had Mako shark (not really weird to me at all but others might think so). It was cooked like a sirloin and tasted like a leaner steak...or is it heavy fish? Something around that. I ordered it at a restaurant so I knew what it was and I can venture a guess that it's part of the cuisine if it's on the menu. I'd eat ti again...in fact I look forward to it.

I've had Kangaroo, it was slightly more chewy than normal beef but not enough that will affect your dining experience. Other than that it tastes like beef. Eating my national animal is strange is it? Do other cultures empahise eating national animals?

To be honest, the strangest meat I've ever eaten is duck. But I don't really remember anything, I was a baby and my parents told me I've eaten duck. So yeah, duck.

Well Bison was considered for national land animal in America at one point and it is quite a good meat like beef but far less greasy, it is also eaten here very often.

Octopus. I was six, so I was tricked into eating it by my mother, who told me it was an "onion ring". I don't remember the exact taste, but I do remember it wasn't bad.

I've eaten eel and muttonbird (a medium-sized native bird here in New Zealand), both times as part of cultural outreach things by the local Maori (who have the legal right to harvest those foods - the muttonbird is otherwise, like most native birds, a protected species). Both were smoked and very salty. The eel was quite chewy, and the muttonbird was very oily and greasy.

You should try witchetty grubs then. Very Auzzie bush tucker, apparently they taste like scrambled eggs. I would try one if I can get over the size of them. They're absolutely massive!

I have eaten octopus, on at least three occasions. The best one was at a Greek restaurant, where they eat a lot of octopus. I highly recommend it.

I don't really consider octopus as weird meat as I've eaten it sometimes. But if you're in a landlocked area I can make an exception.

Head cheese. Tasty stuff. Strangely sweet and chewy. Great for sandwiches, crackers, or by itself. I like to have it with mustard.

I've had the chance to eat snails. Basically it just tastes like dirt unless you eat it with bread. In which case, it tastes like dirty garlic bread. I've also eaten the larvae of the huhu beetle which are edible and taste like peanut butter.

I have also eaten tahr (spelled as "thar" here) which is basically a small furry goat like animal native to the Himalayas but introduced here as an animal for bored people to hunt. It tastes somewhat like a stronger version of lamb.

The maggots of casu marzu.
Disgusting.
The vilest thing I've ever eaten. Well, no, I think I spat them right after, and the "cheese" too. Uurgh.

This was during a vacation in Florida, but it's not exactly a staple where I live so...

Ok, I don't know about US octopuses and if they are rare but eat Octopus again, it's tasty.

I used to have Maori neighbors in a rental property over our back fence. A few years ago, they strung up two eels from the clothesline to dry. By the time they got around to eating them, the flies had already laid maggots and the eyes had disappeared.

But like I said, they're not really a staple in Western Kentucky. Given my area, it could be expected that I've tried more "exotic" local items like Opossum, but Opossums are cute and I'm not a brave person when it comes to weird foods.
