I made it to first class.

We had to shoot a rifle with sufficient accuracy to avoid killing anyone.

I had to tie some knots, including the infamous sheepshank.

And I had to start a fire in the snow with whatever materials I could find in the woods, plus (thank God) a match.
Then I had to cook a potato, a carrot, and a piece of beef in my fire.

Then I had to eat them.

I carefully wrapped them all in foil. I expected the carrot would take longer to cook than the potato, so I was dismayed to find my potato still crisp and raw while the carrot was burned black all the way through.

Nothing daunted, I decided to eat them both, and I did.

Soon I was feeling most nauseous but I had to finish the challenge or forgo my coveted badge!

The fire sputtered out; I could not get it going again.

I looked at the beef; it might pass for "black and blue", for those who desire their meat extra rare.

I figured I was getting sick already, so what the hell.

My troop master observed me consuming the bloody remains, and I got my badge.

And yes, when I got home. I sicked up for a few hours.

Enjoy it, I remember the one I went to, not bad.
You know you've made it on NSG when you have a whole thread created around what you said.

Where'd you do scouts? For me it is not like that at all.

It's not a question of where, it's a question of when.

Pope Joan is 57 years old, that's what they did back then.

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I looked at the picture of a sheepshank in Wikipedia. I went out the back, got a rope, and tied one. Pfft, easy!

You ate raw meat and potato though. That's well hard!

Back then you ate raw meat and vegetables and, if you were lucky, you were buggered senseless by the scoutmaster and didn't have to do the early morning runs.

Hmm... I knew I should have begged harder to join the Scouts when I was a lad 8)

Instead my family took the cheap route. The Salvation Army had a similar organisation to the Scouts, only much, much cheaper. I lasted a month in it before one of the older kids threatened me with a knife.
