It was abandoned because the pseudo-gold standard under the fed and the $2.5 for every $1.00 of gold collapsed when people started making bankruns. So the natural response was obviously not to admit fault, but to confiscate everyone's gold.

It's far more complex than that.

While the standard might appeal to those less inclined towards a central bank having a large say and so forth, most of the benefits attributed to the gold standard pretty much disappeared with the onset of the First World War. It also became increasingly expensive to maintain by the time the 60's rolled round, to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars in today's money for the USA.

There is also the issue of such economies being vulnerable to price shocks, which would undoubtably make Russia's current economic situation that much worse had it currently been under the gold standard.

I live in California, where gas prices have been extremely high (it's been mostly above $4.00 since the Recession. Hell, I still remember when it was like $5.00 in 2008).

Anyways, gas prices are now below $3.00, for the first time since like 2006. I like this.

New York is about the same. I like this too. Now to get to Texas where is should be below $2 by now.

I've heard it hit $1.98 in Flint so it's probably like a $1.65 a gallon in Texas.

They had on the news an Arabian official who has to do with oil. He said Arabia will not be cutting down production in a few months or ever. The news analysis said that they do not want to repeat what happened the last time. Seems the last time they cut oil production to stabilize oil and ended up losing market share. So they will not do this again. So it seems for at least a few years there will be cheap oil. Has supplies go down over the years then the price will start going up.

This means Russia and Venezuela better start mining for gold big time.

Gas is about $2.15 a gallon here in Illinois. I think I'll go ahead and hold on to my Buick. I just don't feel the need to buy some overly expensive truck/SUV with shit mileage. But then again, I don't haul anything and I live in a city. Additionally, I'm not a hick, unlike the folks who buy vehicles like that around where I live.

I'll put on my conspiracy theory hat and say that OPEC is letting prices drop in the hopes that businesses in the West will make the short term decision to lessen investment in renewables, in order that OPEC might extend its profiteering.

Maybe it's just that the Arabs really, really hate African and American efforts to do them over with their own reserve, and since the largest Kuwaiti and Saudi oil fields basically seep oil like an spread gash, they don't have much to worry about themselves.

I always thought we should bleed the Middle East dry before we even think about touching our own stash.
