America actually wasn't that important. Germany was basically forced to surrender when Austria Hungary surrendered and granted Italy access to a completely undefended southern Germany. Also the Communist revolution was already in full swing when America joined the party.

At an early point in the philosophical development of mankind, prevent the development of the line of thought that short term gains are an acceptable alternative to long term stability. (But may need to do this several times to put it down every time it rears its head again..)

We'd be less technologically advanced for it, without the race to exploit resources as fast as possible driving us, but would also have a lower world population and a much better resource situation today, which goes a long way to solving most of the current big issues better than what our advanced society is managing lately.
