Giving a ride home to a stranger, helping the elderly cross the street, and holding doors for disabled people are things that we do to make ourselves feel better. We do it because we want that gratitude, or to be acknowledged as good people by society. You don't do it because it is an obligation, you do it because it helps you feel good about yourself.
