I think by now we have all established and agreed that this is a disgusting and vile act. Now the question is, who and why? I don't think whoever it was meant to kill. Why go through the trouble of using chlorine gas when one could have used a handgun, scissors, a knife, or various other objects to kill? To me at least, it seems like a scare tactic.

The American "culture war" is generally a term used by reactionaries and Christian fundamentalists to refer to a peacible dissent and opposition to things such as abortion and homosexuality. It's called a "war" not because it requires violence, but because it's a battle for the hearts and minds of the court of public opinion. (-and in the case of abortion, the Church is winning in the USA.) It's a strictly nonviolent debate, not a bloodied war.

Powdered chlorine, (Calcium hypochlorite) is the typical substance used in pools. It will irritate you and it is smelly, but it's stable and won't kill you. This was hardly "chlorine gas" which would overtake you quickly and bring you to your knees in chest pain before you can get away from it. You'd be hospitalized for weeks as you cough up gallons of puss as your lungs burn.

Usually it'll be specific assassinations. Anti abortion terrorism has involved some bombings (usually it's shootings, shootings, and more shootings,) but they've almost exclusively killed staff at abortion clinics.
Hate to say it, but guys like the Army of God don't see people who work at or patronize abortion clinics as collateral damage. Those are their intended targets.

On that same token, anyone who hates furries likely wouldn't consider furry con goers to be collateral damage.

But gas, in a convention, can't be controlled to nearly the extent a bomb can. Besides, which Christian terrorist group has shown any interest in killing furries? They've attacked a lot of abortion clinics and some gay clubs, but I can't find a single case of any of them breaking their usual targets like this.
I think it's super unlikely that this is Identity or Christian Patriot. Like I said, it sounds like KKK, if anything, but could well be a lone crazy person judging by the lack of particularly realistic political motivations.
