North Korea isn't even that homophobic. it's one of the worst countries in the world, sure, but that doesn't mean it literally embodies every aspect of evil and oppression.

Anyways, speaking as an ani-colonialist radical queer dude, I definitely would not support Western military action for the cause of gay rights. It would result in countless deaths and would greatly inflame homophobia, because people in Uganda or Iran or wherever would equate homosexuality with the white imperialists bombing their children.

That is a very reasonable answer.

Does it change anything in your view if the problem were restated as follows:

In some distant future, gay rights are well recognized in most countries, but an isolated military fascist country that controls significant population (let's say anti-gay stuff gets dialed even further up in Russia and the country in question is some breakaway nation that has no nukes but lots of kalashnikovs and tanks and migs or whatever), and that they are rounding up gays and killing them. Let's say the death toll is in the hundreds of thousands or more, and it is ongoing.

Non-violent sanctions are attempted by the global community, and in this case, have been ineffective.

As Secretary of the RoDN, you have to make a recommendation to the President who will decide and then plead his/her case to congress for war.

Assume for the sake of discussion the fact set is not in dispute.

What do you recommend and why?

It's not even illegal to be gay in North Korea.. We should lay heavy pressure, though, on nations like Nigeria, Uganda, Saudi Arabia and the other 80 countries where you can be imprisoned for homosexuality to decriminalize it by ceasing aid and funding pro-LGBT groups
