The Soviet Union lost the cold war the moment the German Revolution of 1918-9 failed. Which is to say, they lost it before it even began.

The only win condition that is realizable for the USSR, starting with a point of divergence in 1945, is stalemate. The Cold War ends in mutual detente, the Soviet system survives and is able to modernize and take advantage of the information revolution free from crippling military spending, but the world is still divided into a world capitalist sphere, and a less well developed Soviet sphere, with some level of mutual economic integration that occurs on Soviet terms and is able to leverage their development.

California, Hawaii, the CSA and Texas succeed from the US, North Korea unites with South Korea, East Germany unites with West Germany. The only capitalist bastions left in the world is in Great Britain, Afghanistan, India, Japan and Ireland. Japan and Great Britain have severe embargoes put against them.

I would already graduated from University and I would be a secondary school teacher, teaching kids Marxist-Leninism.
