Crossing guard "high five" ban in Canada

Postby Pope Joan » Tue Dec 02, 2014 4:21 pm

The city of Peterborough Ontario, midway between Toronto and Ottawa, has forbidden school crossing guards to give the familiar high-five hand slap to students. The school seems to say this is out of considerations for safety. The kids are heartbroken; this little gesture of friendship gives them courage to face a tough day. Parents are outraged.
One says that this is an example of the "Americanization of Canada", and I agree. Silly zero tolerance policies that accomplish nothing, other than making us all miserable.

Are the officials correct? Are they ridiculous? Are they Americanized? Think of the children!

Some parents say it is fine to sacrifice community emotional support for children, in order to protect their dreary grey lives. http://www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com/ ... -city-hall

Hm. I have some friends in Peterborough. So, what's the reasoning behind the ban exactly?

According to the links, the city claims it is enforcing national Canadian law forbidding physical contact between students and crossing guards. However, no other city has taken this rule to such extremes.

I always admire the common sense of Canada. I remember walking down to the shore of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, south of Moncton. An official sign posted there declared: "The clams here are poisonous. If you want to dig them, eat them, and get sick, go ahead."

How refreshing. How non-nanny state.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand I see it as being pointless legislation, but the news article did give a good example of when this might be a bit dangerous. I think if anything you should at least have guidelines for saftey reasons but not a full out ban like this.

Crossing guards should give kids high-fives. It's sad when kind gestures provoke our ire.

Considering that Canada is not an independent entity of its own, I doubt this could be ruled as unconstitutional but I would like someone an expert in Canadian law to tell me more

Americans have absolutely nothing to do with this. It has everything to do with how Canada is rotten to the core in its unswerving wave of liberalism.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pro: Sortition, gold standard, small and efficient government, concise laws, community policing, responsible private gun ownership, school choice, absolutely free market, low taxes, net neutrality, press freedom, etc

Against: Dynasties, fiat currency, excessive bureaucracy, verbose laws, police militarization, gun control, state-only education, crony capitalism, high taxes, net non-neutrality, censorship, empire, etc

Yes, with the success of the Conservatives, the NDP, and the PQ, you can really see how liberalism is experiencing a massive surge in Canada.

And you can both take a vacation for the continued baiting.

Manisdog: *** 7 day ban ***, if your behavior continues, you will find yourself blocked from this site.

Avenio: *** 7 day ban ***, you should know better. You really, really should.

Giving both the same, because both were pointless baiting and had no place in this thread - also to emphasize the fact that THIS SORT OF BEHAVIOR NEEDS TO STOP. I don't care who is pulling it out for another go-round. Knock it off.

The Americanization of Canada must end, I like Canada how it is. Nice and friendly, unlike its southern neighbor.

Why must all these threads devolve to pointless attacks against each other rather than a discussion of the issues...?

I find this to be quite stupid and pointless. I hate when rules are extended to the point of absurdity. After a certain point what may have had a core of good becomes stretched to the point of being detrimental. It is as important to know when to stop imposing a rule as it is to know when to start.

Yes, Derpy, I too am disappoint.

I admire so much about Ontario. The excellent ice cream. The fine quality of rural health care (saved my father in law's life). The practical efficiency of Canada Tire. Humbugs. Hamilton Ti-Cats. CHUM. The Trent-Severn canal. Beausoleil Island. Algonquin Park. Ontario Place. Wawa. Rush. Youth Hockey. The Museum of Civilization (Okay, it's in Hull), Ganonoque and its bell tower, Boldt Island, Upper Canada Village, and a general overall attitude of good sense.

But now? Alas, I do sniff a whiff of American nanny state overkill.
