Animism, mythology, etc. and humanism was discussed as a concept even earlier than that, but secular humanism did not enter philosophy until 1851, and didn't see a revival and global movement until the 1960's.

It didn't enter as a fully separate term until 1851.

That does not mean it simply didn't exist.

I have these kinds of debates on the bus.

To sum it up, it ends with just the Christians going "your a bigoted, racist, stupid idiot" and walking off.

Even though I make points that make sense...

So, it wasn't properly discussed as a movement until 1851.

It's logically obvious atheism came before theism.

Theism just came along at some point in our evolution/history as a multi-purpose philosophical tool.

A crude and antiquated one, if I may say so. 8)

Care to explain why my Buddhist and Hindu friends celebrate it then?

Christmas, nowadays, is (most commonly) not a religious ceremony. It's not an atheist ceremony, it's just more like the 4th of July; more consumerist than actually a religious holiday.

Well, actually, theological and ancient historians have proved jesus was not born on the 25th of December (this is of course if we are taking the swapping of the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar into account). Do you know how many Gods and demigods were supposedly born on the 25th of December? Sol Invictus is one off the top of my head, the Roman God, the Unconquerable Sun.

Do you know where the Christmas Tree Comes from? In fact research shows holly, wreaths and fern trees go back to many pagan religions.
As for the food and celebration? Well, that was the end of the year from the harvest collection of the Germanic and Nordic peoples. A time of family gatherings to keep warm and tell stories of mythical creatures by the hearth.

To say the winter period is now a "Christian festival" is incorrect. There are still elements of the pagan traditions. This time of year is actually called Yule Tide.
When Christianity became dominant through the years after Emperor Constantine, Christianity grew and morphed these Pagan traditions into their religion. Why do you think Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas when he became Lord Protector of the British Isles?

No. Flood basically said that Christianity rules Atheism sucks. It was an empty statement of opinion. He certainly has no obligation to prove his opinion, when obviously its his opinion that was stated, and not something objectively provable.

I knew the Christmas Tree thing, but I didn't know the stuff about the gods. That's interesting.

I found this actually, if you are interested.
Interestingly, all these Gods were born of Virgins, on the 25th and were Sun God/Gods of the Sun.

Although Buddha is never proclaimed to be a God, he never said he was, and there is no evidence to say he was a God at all.
