That he was an idiot? Yes, I will argue that. Because it is both idiotic and dumb to believe that, when even observant people could determine that the gun was "probably fake", a fucking cop can't distinguish the difference.

Or perhaps rather than an idiot, an inexperienced officer who had just been told by his superiors that there was an armed black guy running around, with no mention of the fake gun or the fact the person in question was a kid, and because of that escalated things further than he would have if he'd known it was a kid with a toy gun?

Or, perhaps, someone who isn't fucking paying attention to what they're doing.

That this fails to grasp the minds of people here is what is concerning.

How often do you encounter people, whose intentions you do not know, and that you have been told are armed, who appear to be reaching for a firearm-shaped object that only appeared in your field of view a short time ago ?

1. I hope you know the orange safety thingies had been removed.
2. I think every 12 year old not in the hospital can lift a couple of pounds in one arm.
3. The officer was unaware Rice was a twelve year old, so that wouldn't have even registered.
4. THE ENTIRE GUN TWIRLING... THING, THAT YOU'VE COME UP WITH, IS WHOLLY IRRELEVANT TO THIS DEBATE.

Common sense isn't that common and that is apparent on here. Especially when people think that a child should literally be allowed to kill someone because you shouldn't harm a child no matter what.

So you're telling me that, put in this situation, having heard that an armed black male was running around, and having briefly seen him only for a few seconds- kinda short for an adult, and wearing a hoodie, with something that from any distance would look like a firearm (which he had been told about), you would have instantly realized this was a kid, and also realized that because of him twirling the gun in the surveillance videos you hadn't even seen it must be fake, and not shot him. All this while it looked like the person who you somehow magically knew was a child was going for his gun for an unknown purpose.

You, sir, should become a police officer or a detective. You must be very observant.

It actually does, yes.

Mostly because it should have been fucking obvious to point this out. I mean fuck, it's literally communication 101.

The fact that a guy was incompetent enough to not relay it when they should have points out the department didn't do its job right on teaching this guy to dispatch properly and to communicate relevant information to the cops.

Seriously not the cop's fault, stop trying to blame him. If anything, blame the kid's parents (or maybe, despite how unpopular this opinion is, the kid for removing the orange tip) or the dispatcher for failing to inform the cop of the gun being fake. From a distance, the gun is awfully realistic. Hell, even if I was an inch from the gun, I'd have to pick it up and examine it to ensure it was fake. Throw in the fact the dude might be trying to shoot you, you'll react the same way the cop did. Plus he was a rookie.
