Well, PETA is apparently creating a Minecraft server to combat the abuse of animals in Minecraft. So no more killing sheep, cows, pigs or the newer animals now there. Personally, I don't understand why PETA has to be so weird and pretty extreme. The premise of the organization should be something we all agree with, which is the ethical treatment of animals. I am pretty sure most people believe in this from vegetarians to the most rabid meat eaters. So it just looks like the latest outreach of weirdness by PETA.

You know, PETA has done some stupid things in the past, but I'm actually okay with this. I don't think that they needed to do this, but it's not their usual level of offensiveness. It's not like they're making a Minecraft-themed sequel of their Pokémon parody game, they're just making a server with some unique rules. That said, their irrational obsession with videogames (seriously, have they done anything noteworthy of late that hasn't involved them being offended by a game?) needs to stop.

I'm very passionate about stopping cruelty to animals and the like, but this makes very little sense Not the best way to get people to take you seriously, PETA. I suppose crafting a bed would not be seen as cruel, since sheep do not have to billed to gain wool, but I'm sure people playing Minecraft like myself aren't going to become cruel monsters simply because we occasionally "kill" a pixelated animal

It makes a great deal of sense if you think about it, actually. Some people don't like hurting animals and for some of them that extends to games. Vanilla minecraft practically requires you to kill animals to "progress". Creating a modpack that allows one to roleplay a vegan is not really all that ridiculous when you think about it. Especially if it doesn't force said lifestyle on anyone else.

I mean, I personally want to see them add lambshanks as a food to the game so I have more reasons to herd sheep, but I'm not going to fault someone for wanting to play Minecraft in such a way that they don't have to hurt animals at all.

Actually, there's not much you actually need to kill animals for. Wool can be sheared, leather armor is rarely used anyway, and for food you can grow crops.

Unless I'm very much mistaken you do need leather for books nowadays. Without books you remove enchanting from the game completely. Also, unless you obtain a skeleton spawner, you're not going to have any arrows. Kiss killing the Enderdragon goodbye in that case. (And if you're vegan, you can't get that cake achievement either.) Fishing was also the only "reliable" way to get nametags, last I played.

This of course can be mitigated by changing the recipes and by altering what you can reap from the sea, so maybe it is possible to still play the game.

You don't need to change anything to "still play the game". Minecraft is mostly about putting stuff together anyway. So if you are fine with that and don't care about collecting every possible achievement you should be fine without killing the dragon.

You don't need to change anything to "still play the game". Minecraft is mostly about putting stuff together anyway. So if you are fine with that and don't care about collecting every possible achievement you should be fine without killing the dragon.

Locking out enchanting (leather) and possibly brewing (blaze rods) knocks out a pretty big chunk of the game. If that's not what you're after, then sure, you can still play the game. But if you want to have those things and play on a server where killing animals isn't possible, something would have to get tweaked.

Now that I think about it... do villagers trade leather? It might still be seen as unethical by some people, but that would be a way to get at the necessary resources.

Hey, so do I. I've gone on pig-slaying rampages in Minecraft despite personally being less than enthusiastic about eating pork (it has to do with how the castration process works in Germany). But a couple of people that I know don't feel that way and are as uncomfortable with in game violence as they are with real violence. What PETA is doing here is giving vegetarians and vegans that are like that an option to play the game on terms that they're comfortable with. Since it doesn't take anything away from me, there's really nothing wrong with it.
