I've heard of hypotheses of Europe having had contact with America prior to Columbus but, other than the Vikings, the rest always seem more like legends, much like Prester John... The tale of the Irish monks who sailed and found what was later to be known as America, yeah, that legend. Was it Brendan? I don't recall the name.

Most of these stories relate to post-medieval re-interpretations of earlier stories, in this case an attempt to fit a hagiographical religious allegory into modern geographical understandings; they're a very poor fit for each other in this specific case.

We should never be so close-minded as to ignore the possibility that there were isolated cases of individual sailors from the Old World reaching the Americas by accident; it's unlikely, but not impossible. But the idea that there was sustained contact that would lead to a verifiable archaeological signature is far more difficult for a number of reasons, and there's simply no reliable archaeological evidence (never mind proof) beyond L'Anse aux Meadows, the existence of with should at least help disprove the occasional contention from the pseudo-archaeological fringe that those pesky academic ivory tower archaeologists have a vested interest in refusing to ever accept evidence when it does turn up.

Siberians over the alaskan land bridge
Polynesians crossing the pacific
phoenicians, probably on accident, definitely stranded if any made it to shore
Romans, also probably on accident and also a definite stranding
Vikings in newfoundland and eastern canada
possibly chineese explorers, but probably not
some asshat from spain via italy

Rapa Nui was only colonized by around 1000-1200.

I know it was the last one before New Zealand at 1200 and the Chatham Islands at 1500.

You have to be careful with this sort of thing. The discovered/not discovered barrier is not as impermeable as many suppose, and the Americas have likely be visited from both sides many times, but any single claim not-substantiated is dubious.

Now I've not heard this thing about Portuguese fishermen off Brazil, but you may be thinking of Beothuk, the waters around which they did fish.

A few Iberians actually did get to Brazil before the official discovery of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500.

David Boyle makes reference in his book Towards the Settings Sun, to accounts of sailors reporting sights of land, pre-Columbus, to the west. These accounts were from ships that had been blown off far off course. But most of them reported these were sightings of islands that were thought to exist at the time, mythical islands like hy-Brasil.

I believe these sightings were really or probably of land or islands of what later became known as the Americas.

Something that always makes me think is that, while growing up, we were always fed stories of Columbus and how this was a great time of exploration (which, don't get me wrong, it was), but it wasn't exploration to ''discover'' anything. It was exploration for profit, to get to the Indies and make money. Columbus was sold as a hero, and the truth is... less glamorous. In reality, he was an abusive man who only cared about money.
