Will Massachusetts go red?

Postby Rolamec » Sat Jan 09, 2010 4:15 am

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010 ... -heats-up/

It's interesting, I got the email from MoveOn.org talking about the campaign earlier. Honestly I can't imagine a Democrat losing in Massachusetts, but with Ted Kennedy gone, is it possible?

Your thoughts!

Okay. To add a point, let us assume she did lose, what do you think that would say about how the United States feels towards Obama and the Democratic majority. I mean this is Massachusetts, in New England, where only two years ago every Republican or nearly every Republican on the Congressional level was gone.

I think that would say something.

I can't believe no one has said anything yet.

Can it be? Is all of NSG tired of American politics?

Say it isn't so.

If it does go Red, you can kiss all those legalized gay marriages goodbye.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.

Sorry, I didn't mean to add on more of something that was annoying people. I just thought it was interesting. Had Ted Kennedy been around, I would have had no doubts, but with him gone, with unpopularity hitting the Democrats, I think its a scary picture. That Massachusetts could go red, would deflate the morale of the Democrats and only increase the arrogance of the Republicans.

It won't go red. The polls you are citing are Rasmussen, which always oversamples his republican respondents.

The only way that Massachusetts can go red is if Obama disappoints his base too much, and half the Democrats stay home.

Guess what?

A recent poll, not by Rassmussen, showed 45 % of the Democrats are so disappoited with Obama that they might just stay home. I suppose a GOTV-campaign will save the day for Coakley, but it will be close shave in the end.

All they have to do is say that Legalized Gay Marriage is being threatened.

True. We shouldn't underestimate the fact that Republican victories are the results of low turns outs (especially amongst Democrats) and high ones by conservatives. I really don't want to see 09 become another 94.

Or via misleading ads, such as the misleading ad which quoted Coakley as saying "We've got to raise taxes". She said this in the context of raising tax revenue by increasing employment: the Republicans said that this meant that she's going to raise the tax rates.

Lies, deceit and thuggery....just another day in the life of a teabagger.

Indeed. There are significantly more Democrats than Republicans. If all the Democrats voted every time, they'd never lose. They never do all vote, though.

Pretty much. Add blatant, unethical/illegal voter disenfranchisement and obstruction to that list as well.

I know, which is the problem and what frustrates me. I mean GOTV was great in 08, but I would say of the 200 calls I made on election night about 30-50 actually talked to me, and about 25-35 actually said they would vote or have already done so. So I can't imagine what it would be like on an off year.

Democrats aren't all that better, but in my opinion they are better than Republicans. And closer to something I would rather have than than what Palin and Beck would.

Frankly I'd love to see a more liberal party in power, like the Green party. But realistically, voting for them doesn't do much. I hate to say that, I am all for voting for whatever you want. But honestly, I vote Democrat and I'm fortunate to have a pretty okay congressman (Norm Dicks) and okay senators Murray and Cantwell); I mean it could be worse, I could be in Nebraska.

It's probably a sign that the political system needs a bit of a shake-up when it's a choice between who is the least worst.
