Well, I missed that part. I was more distracted by the fact that all the anger at this comes from outside the city. It's almost like they didn't think it was a big deal to get rid of it.

Yeah, it's weird how attached some people are to having the advancement of their religion funded by public monies in contravention of the highest law of the land and despite some religious organisations that share their beliefs having more than ample funds to cover such projects themselves.

Quite so. In fact, the Norma B. Handloff park is 15.8 acres large, has 3 tennis courts, a tennis practice wall, 2 basketball courts, 2 baseball fields, picnic tables, parking and shelter on top of the remaining playground equipment.

I'm not sure what you mean. The OP's article says that it was a "Newark-area resident" who visited the park and complained. Newark, DE is pretty small, and Wilmington, DE is much bigger, so it would be odd for a local paper to describe somebody as in the area unless they lived very close to it. (I'm in Wilmington, so I know the area pretty well; there are lots of random small towns and unincorporated areas used as landmarks by the local press.)

Good question. Could have been done by a city employee deliberately, could have been a mistake, could have been an outside group that donated the thing, and the city never checked into it. Newark is pretty liberal, so I suspect one of the last two.
