How would you describe your political ideology?

Postby Atlanticatia » Sat Nov 08, 2014 10:17 pm

How would you describe your ideology? What are your principles? What do you believe, as far as political ideology goes?

Be as detailed as possible!

Edit: the poll is about economic ideology only. For example, far right would be pure capitalism and unfettered free markets, while far left would be some form of pure communism. Think of it like the economics scale on the political compass.

Personally, I'm a social democrat and social liberal. I believe that:
I'd probably consider myself 'centre-left', and very socially liberal. I believe in a mixed economy designed around the market, but with an extensive public sector, a comprehensive and universalist welfare state, and low income inequality - similar to the Nordic Model. Cradle to grave social protection. Society should be as socially inclusive as possible, and we need to fight social exclusion. I also think that environmentalism and fighting climate change is very important, so there might be a little bit of 'green' in the mix, too.

I think that all people should have equal rights and opportunities regardless of their income, wealth, social position, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, etc. A relatively low amount of economic inequality, which can be achieved by the redistribution of income and wealth. Nobody should live in poverty (both relatively and absolutely).

I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. If I listed every possible economic ideology, it wouldn't fit on the poll. :p

Centre-left (and a bit of the radical centre, I suppose). I'm a social liberal (not necessarily a social democrat because I don't think democracy is that great). I'm a monarchist too.

I'm centre-right and usually describe myself as a Progressive Conservative or a Liberal-Conservative. I am pretty moderate on most social issues, with a slight conservative lean.

I support a mostly free market economy with limited (but by no means no) government intervention. I believe that there are certain investments that the government needs to make, particularly in education, to ensure equality of opportunity and meritocracy. I actually also support a welfare state to an extent, partially as a way of increasing aggregate demand by ensuring that there is more consumer capital in the hands of the less well-off, but also because everyone falls on hard times and needs a bit of temporary relief now and again. As long as it is temporary. But ultimately taxes should be low and productivity should be high - we all benefit from a strong economy, rather than one which is choked to death by regulation and taxation.

On social issues I of course believe that all people should be treated equally, and that government should intervene as little as possible in our personal lives, but I am strongly against ideas such as gender/ethnic quotas, positive discrimination and affirmative action. I have no time for the "soft on crime" approach that is endemic in countries such as mine, and support harsher sentencing, the abolition of parole and absolutely no second chances for repeat offenders. I am also sceptical of multiculturalism and believe that immigration laws need to be stricter.

I take defence, law and order and security very seriously.

I am a moderate centrist with left-leaning tendencies. To me, looking at solutions from all sides are essential for getting things done politically. For example, this is my current position on health care (which is very flexible, as people who have discussed this with me in the past will remember):

The Citizenry of Lalaki has a free market based universal health care system. How does this work? Insurance is handled by lightly regulated businesses, allowing for the benefits of the market to arise. However, public vouchers are provided for citizens in need, students, the elderly, and other groups of people who may have trouble paying for coverage. The money for these vouchers come from sales taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and various other items. Discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions is prevented by a health savings account program. Because insurance companies generally worry about covering these citizens due to higher costs involved, the government provides a second type of voucher, along with a tax credit to those affected. This money is put into an account that holds all credits guaranteed, which can be withdrawn for medical events. As extra costs would be offset by the HSA, businesses have no incentive to discriminate against those with chronic ailments. All people would be covered fairly.

I actually posted this in Factbooks and National Information. I modeled my nation's economic and health systems based on my beliefs. This isn't what health care should ideally look like (I actually favor a public option), but this is what is most pragmatically possible in the United States. Pragmatism is key in today's society. We have to be flexible, as long as we are getting our goals accomplished.

When it comes to any issue, I look at all sides with an open mind. As seen in my signature, I believe in welfare capitalism, by which I mean that I believe in a market economy coupled with public assistance so that all citizens are able to receive help that they need. How we implement this sort of system should depend on a case-by-case basis. For the United States, perhaps welfare in the form of a large negative income tax, extensive vouchers, and extensive employment insurance would be the best solution. Again, I would prefer more extensive welfare systems as seen in many European nations, but I am willing to compromise as long as people who need assistance are getting what they need. The NIT and voucher approach would be agreeable to many American Conservatives and moderate Libertarians, as well as progressives.

In short, I believe in a market economy with an extensive voucher based welfare system and a case-by-case evaluation of policy.

Socially, I believe in civil liberties/rights. I am a supporter of LGBT marriage, the right to privacy, and so on. In this regard I am leaning to the left.
