You know, last time we had this thread, I said it was stupid then.

Homeless people are not alligators. There. I said it.

Do it in a private place?

The problem is it creates pedestrian traffic issues when you do it out of a food truck. Officials prefer it be done in a gymnasium or cafeteria.

Where, exactly? Homeless people tend to congregate in public places, not private ones. If you're providing a service for those who are down and out, then it's best to go to where they are, considering the difficulty of getting word out to the general population of homeless people.

There are community houses, shelters, churches etc. where food can be distributed.

What's wrong with distributing food in places other than those areas?

Like I said, community houses/centers and churches/synagogues/mosques/temples (if present) are also available. They could also utilize their own place of operations to distribute the food.

Again, that's not an effective way to get to the general homeless population. You have to go to where they are.

If they weren't so lazy, they'd just drive to the church to get their meals.

They aren't saying "don't feed the homeless". They are stating that facilities should be made available, keep 500 feet from residential areas etc.

There are many cities that don't feed the homeless in public. "Soup kitchens" are set up in buildings such as churches or in privately owned structures. The homeless experience a meal while not exposed to the elements, and they are provided with a place to wash up, a restroom, a table to sit at. These places carry a food license but, because of the nature of the food served, it's very minimum in restriction. "Keep lunch meats cold, no moldy bread". The homeless are given dignity to eat as human beings rather than thrown scraps on the street as if they were dogs.

I don't agree with Fort Lauderdale's laws but I don't see those laws as being much different than what's found in other major cities.

And if they don't have cars, what's stopping them from getting on their cell phones and calling for a cab?

Exactly.

How many miles do you expect them to walk in 100+ degree weather?

Okay, I'm going to ignore the implications of "The homeless are given dignity", as if it's anyone else's to give, the spare change in the bottom of one's pocket to hand out. Instead, I'm going to simply recommend that you think about that phrasing.

Again, if you want to effectively feed the homeless population, then it's best to go to where they are due to the difficulty of getting the word out. Also, speaking from experience, soup kitchens will (understandably) turn people away if they appear to be under the influence of anything, or if they're being disruptive, meaning that those with serious substance abuse or mental issues are underserved, or not served at all (No, I wasn't drunk or disorderly. I simply saw it on a daily basis from my own place in line). There's also the issues of those with serious physical disabilities who are unable to travel, or simply those suffering from sores on their feet due to a lack of sanitation. Are these people to be left to die in the streets simply because some may find them unpleasant to look at?

As far as necessary so long as they can eat? Do you think they will sit still and starve to death because they might have to walk a bit? What do you think they do all day exactly?

Ever suffer from psychiatric disabilities so disabling that you were unable to follow simple directions to a place, or keep track of the times that food was being served, or that caused you to be disruptive on the rare occasions that you did find the place?

Ever been such a slave to alcohol or another substance that you were simply unable to function?

Ever suffer from such horrifying sores on your feet that you were unable to walk for more than a couple of blocks?

The homeless in the article were traveling to that distribution point. This isn't about travel woes.

90-year-old Abbott prepares hundreds of meals each week for the homeless in the kitchen of the Sanctuary Church.

This wasn't on the street at all then. This was one of the establishments that are mentioned in every other post.

You are treating them like children, they survive on the street. What do you think they do all day? Just hide under a shade or something?

There are many other places I have pointed out in the other posts.

If what Cerillium is correct then they were already walking to a distribution point, on schedule every Wednesday for the food :eyebrow:

He prepared the food there and distributes it elsewhere.

Speaking from experience, I mostly panhandled, checked the social services hotline to see if a shelter bed had opened up, and kept out of the sight of the police to the best of my ability. The aforementioned sores on my feet kept me from being able to walk too far. Others drank or did drugs to drive away their demons, or simply ranted at nothing that anyone else could see.

No, but I imagine it generally doesn't involve walking for miles.
