Should every woman have a gun?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1XGPvbWn0A We have all watched the video where a woman walks through the ghetto of New York City. The responses she got were mixed. A lot of the men who spoke to her greeted her. I don't think that's harassment to say "Hi." However, it's harassment to do that repeatedly and to follow a woman around when she's clearly not interested and the chance of changing her mind is slim. To put it out there, I think her outfit was provocative, the bottom part because of how tight her pants were, however, clothing is never an excuse to treat any woman like a whore.

I thought at first, why doesn't she just curse them out? I realized that a woman cursing a man out in response won't stop these sleazy men from objectifying our sisters, our mothers, our daughters. Men like this don't take women seriously; women are just body parts to them. It's this mindset that rapists have, it's the mindset of a misogynist. Violence is the only language that these savages are going to understand.

Like a creep, like a pervert, like a savage, the comedian Michael Che had the nerve to make fun of street harassment.
Michael Che wrote:i wanna apologize to all the women that ive harrassed with statements like "hi" or "have a nice day" or "youre beautiful". i cant imagine what that must feel like. the closest thing I've experienced is maybe when a girl recognizes me from tv and they say things like "AHHHH!! OH MY GOD!! SNL SNL SNL!! TAKE A PICTURE!! TAKE A PICTURE!! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!! WHATS YOUR NAME AGAIN?! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! WAIT SAY SOMETHING FUNNY!!" but even that is nothing like the harrassment of having a complete stranger tell me to "smile."
No, it's stupid when misogynists talk about this nonexistent double standard. I wouldn't want a woman to approach me in the street, a self-respecting woman [A woman who doesn't sell her body] doesn't want that and neither does any self-respecting man [A man who doesn't expect women to sell their bodies].

This bring us to the question: Should every woman have a gun?

I think yes, because a woman can protect herself against sexual predators like the man who followed her for five minutes but I'm concerned with setting the precedent of a woman shooting some man over something not so bad like a greeting. I think men also should tip their hats or nod downward if they're going to compliment a woman. I believe anything else is creepy, what do you think?

Should every woman know how to a use gun and be armed with one?

Every woman who wants one and can afford one, yes. Otherwise, a brick in the purse works wonders.

No, but this is mostly because I believe that the problem is better combated through a change in societal attitudes. Creating fear for misogynists on the streets is only treating a symptom, not the disease.

Agreed. Although if a woman wants to, has the financies to do so, and can pass a background check than she can carry whatever she wants.

No.

Women can also go on shooting sprees. A handgun doesn't discriminate, it is equally dangerous in male or female hands. Any girl armed with a gun can potentially pull a Hit Girl...

Guns must be banned.

You make it sound like creating fear for misogynists isn't enough. What's the point of preaching to the choir of people like us who aren't misogynists?

Any person who wants to carry a gun should be able to do so, yes. I don't support making it mandatory, I don't support arming people based on sex, and I don't like the general tone of the OP linking these plans to arm all women to that video, and the subtle implications coming from such a link that women should shoot people for talking to them in public.

It isn't enough. Creating fear just makes them opportunists; just makes them stack the odds in their favor. A gun won't protect against a roofie, for example. One must attack misogynist attitudes and the circumstances which give rise to and perpetuate them, else all that's happening is that the problem becomes quieter.

Well if guns are equally dangerous in the hands of anybody then you shouldn't be scared because you can always just shoot the threat.

One bad apple spoils the bunch. I don't think supporting guns is supporting murder, I was making it clear.

People should do whatever they want. That much should be obvious to anyone with half a brain. However, I'd recommend pepper spray for public use.

I don't see the point of this thread.

Don't see why one shouldn't.
You can get a gun if you want.

I think it's frankly fucking ridiculous to suggest that women should have to carry a gun rather than men simply showing a basic level of respect for other people and refraining from harassing women, especially when it's repeatedly been made pretty fucking clear that it's not wanted.

Is the sense of self-entitlement held by men so great that instead of saying "okay, I think we should probably leave women alone since they don't seem to like what we're doing and have asked us to stop" they say "okay, I'm going to keep harassing women even though they don't like it and have made pretty clear that they'd rather we stopped, but if they really wanted to stop us they'd have a gun"?

Fuck. That.

Every woman can buy a gun. But how are you going to just give them one?

And Martial arts training works wonders. However if you want a weapon carry a knife that cuts at all times.

If they think it's necessary, can afford it and are somewhat trained in gun safety, then sure. I wouldn't own one. Not a fan of guns.

That's ridiculous, you would let your female relatives walks out in the dead of night with tiny little pepper spray? That's a bug bite, it's a mosquito. Pepper spray doesn't stop those repeating culprits either.

the streets would be filled with smoke, gunpowder, steel pellets, blood, screams and death...

that would not be cool.

No, we must restrict guns so that only the government (with its trained policemen upholding solemn vows of Justice) can have them

encouraging a Battle Royale is not the way to go

Guns are more effective then knives in that they don't rely on physical prowess as much. That's a terrible idea.

Compulsory gun ownership is as dumb as a full ban on them, so no. But I'd still rather see more dead predators then women who find themselves victims.
