Your favorite small piece of History.

Postby Aristoya » Sun Nov 02, 2014 1:37 pm

Hello good fellows, may I present myself : I am Aristoya also known as 'Captain Cool' ; I'd like to thank you for flying on AristoyaAirlines, I hope you'll have a pleasant flight.

This remarquable topic is where you'll reveal your favorite small part of History. Not the whole World War One, the October Revolution, or Columbus landing in America. Not the rise of Hitler, nor the death of JFK.
Small events that some people may dont know, but -fortunately- you do. A small war, the early days of an ephemere republic hidden in Europe, the revolution of some peasants, etc. Only really small things.

I'll start, because why not.

The Rif War in Morocco (1920-1926), opposing the Rif Republic and its leader Abd-El-Krim, against the Spanish Monarchy and the Third French Republic. The story of the brave Rif fighters defeating Spain is really interesting and has a lot of consequences. The Battle of Annual is actually impressing as hell, and the Rif Republic deserves to be a little more known.

Now, show us how huge is your History knowledge pal :)

Soviet economic growth during the 1950s and 1960s, in particular the effects of the Khrushchev Thaw, economic reforms and the shift to production of consumer goods affected living standards, scientific development and culture as well as its ramifications on competition with the United States in the Cold War.

The All-Drunken, All-Joking, Synod of Fools and Jesters, AKA Peter the Great's 50-year long party, which was headed by a 'prince pope' who blessed people using dutch pipes and vodka 'holy water,' generally while seated on an ornate throne made of beer barrels and wearing a robe made of playing cards.

Before Carrie became Stephen King's break-out novel, he had thrown the manuscript for it into the trash several times, believing the story was trash and was going to go nowhere.

The purchase of Alaska from Russia was originally criticized by many Americans, and was called Seward's folly after the Secretary of State who negotiated the arrangement.

In the Albigensian Crusade, King Pedro II of Aragon rode to the defense of his Cathar subjects in Languedoc, and the Catholic Church was unable to mount any effective propaganda against him, because they had already declared him a Hero of the Church for combating the Moors.

I watched a documentary on the War of 1812 yesterday. Very interesting how the ragtag army of America could beat back the elite forces of the British.

The various colour-coded plans made by the USA to combat foreign enemies - particularly War Plan Red, a conflict against the British Empire. This may have something to do with the fact I'm British.

World War Two, in Papua New Guinea, 1942. A handful of Australian Militia (nicknamed 'chocos' because people thought they would melt under the pressure) were pitted against elite Japanese troops in the first battle of Kokoda. They managed to hold out until the more well trained reinforcements of the Australian army arrived.
This ensues

The thing that has kept my interest for the longest amount of time (which is hard because I have VERY low attention span) is probably Napoleon and the Napoleonic wars.
