Sarcasm Font Proposal

Postby Sarzonia » Thu Jan 07, 2010 1:21 pm

On another message board I frequent, they have an established protocol for a specific font/colour choice to signify that whatever is being written is intended to be sarcastic.

Considering how hard it sometimes is to tell intent over the Internet (for example, I could come across someone calling Jocabia a douchebag and report it in Moderation without realising that Jocabia and said poster have a history of "insulting" each other in that way and they do so endearingly), having a sarcasm font might be a good idea around here.

The other board I'm on also refers to words that look like they should be sarcastic as "missing [sarcasm] font." They use the colour blue to signify sarcasm. I propose we do the same in NSG.

Is this not remarkably easy to manipulate? And nightmarish to police? And therefore back to square one?

What if people were just less sarcastic? It that'd be like, so much better if people were just nice to one another without dissing each others views.

Yeah, that'll be useful. Decide on an arbitrary method of portraying cynicism on the web. I'm sure tons of people are just dying to start adding even more effort into a simple forum post. How do you come up with such fantastic ideas.

Seriously though, some people don't even use punctuation. You expect to establish an actual font system and have people adhere to it? The only way I see that working is if you created some sort of sarcasm tag, like people are always faking ( ie [sarcasm][/sarcasm]) that automatically applied the font color and style, and could be used with a click of a button like the Strikethrough thing.

Nah, it would hamper my freedom of expression. I'm never ever sarcastic and then I cannot use the colour blue anymore when I feel like it.

If I instantly knew, it would make it less funny...as well, I think more people would just automatically treat a post as hostile when they know someone is being sarcastic towards them...

I think a simple, "I was joking" or "It was sarcasm" while clutterful, is less of a hassle than the above two things...

I insert sarcasm often.

I don't want to be hassled with this crap.

Also, if you can't separate sarcasm from sincerity better than 50% of the time, you shouldn't be on the internet, period.

Edit: And I don't believe there is any sarcasm on NS. If anything we are all too serious.

Yes, I think the insult thing has only happened once or twice, its usually obvious enough when people are playing around.

I say yes to sarcasm, or a sarcasm sign of sorts like a quote box which you can enclose it in.

After all, sarcasm doesn't travel well across the internet. And being British I have to check my self quite a bit to make sure I don't come across as a sarcastic git.

Is hard enough being viewed as a snobbish English git let alone to add the burden of sarcasm to it.
