Why?

What if they vote against joining the Republic of Ireland? Just give them the opportunity to vote and let them decide whether they want to stay in the UK, join the Irish Republic or become independent (very unlikely).

Opinion polling regularly puts support for the union at around 70%. Not sure there's much point in having an incredibly divisive referendum now when there are enough problems in NI politics as it is.

Its a complete waste of a vote and unionism doesn't need any fracturing right now thanks.

I'm not actually encouraging people to vote for the Conservatives; but a poster asked what the closest party was to the Conservatives, and I just wanted to point out that you could vote for the actual Conservatives if you so wished, something everyone else in this thread seemed oblivious to. My frustration was due to the exact same question having already been asked and my response having been glossed over then as well.

Which is the party that is center-left but supports the union with GB? Would it be the Alliance Party?

Welcome to my dilemma.

It's why I wanted NI21 to work out, even if it always had the air of being doomed from the start about it.

From a look at Wikipedia since I'm not Northern Irish and an Idiot:

It seems a shame that they have run into internal problems. Hopefully they will sort themselves out.

Maybe you could take control and win the election.

First minister Nadkor sounds optimistic.

Yeah a party that was nothing more than the Basil McCrea show wasn't going to get far.

Yeah, I have been drinking, so I am a tad silly right now.

Would you say I have gone ridiculous if I said I could imagine you being deputy first minister?

Yeah. I'd love for there to be a genuinely progressive pro-union party.

I mean one that isn't a mouthpiece for the UVF. And that isn't an electoral disaster.

Isn't Alliance the closest you get to a progressive pro-union political party?

Alliance purposely and adamantly don't take a position on the constitutional question.

You think your support of significant wrongs against the Irish people are enough to shut anyone up?

1) NationStates does not represent the majority of the Northern Irish population;
2) Sinn Féin are leading because there's no left-wing unionist party.

Didn't you claim to be from Northern Ireland at some point?

1) No one said they did; I'm just telling you that you shouldn't celebrate because a bunch of foreigners (at least the majority) said they preferred Sinn Féin;
2) I'm a Basque-Spanish Brit so I'm not your typical pure Anglo-Saxon Brit. :p
