Not so much the area - more cultural heritage. I brought up the area because, since we're inland, we don't have the wonderful fresh seafood people closer to the city do, and so my friends just don't eat seafood as much.
So we're more susceptible to foreign influences, because we don't have a particularly strong stance on what to call the small shrimp.
Doing a quick Google, it does seem that here in Australia, we don't really get exposed to the small animals you might be thinking of. I've heard of brine shrimp, but I don't know in what context or which country. TBH, I didn't realise you could eat the small ones.
So I think it might be safe to assume that the Australian differentiation between large prawns and small shrimp is one that I'm not exposed to much, but which I can believe.
