I would like a gun

Postby Rolamec » Tue Jan 05, 2010 5:06 pm

So, I plan on purchasing my first rifle pretty soon. I have about 200 bucks saved up and my father has promised to pay around 100 bucks. So in other words 300 dollars.

Now, just one question, what type of gun should I buy? Obviously I'm going for a .22 but any specific rifles, manufacturers, etc.?

Washington state, USA. I'm not remotely interested in an assault rifle, frankly I think they should be banned. But that is a different story. I just need an idea for a first time rifle.

Get a Mosin–Nagant. I've read that you can get one in great condition for about USD $100 in america. I have shot one before they are deadly accurate, but they have quite allot of recoil because they shoot a 7.62x54mmR

Well, if you're looking for more of a "classic", a Winchester is a good choice. To get an idea, you could check out this site: http://www.gunbroker.com/
(Note, I'm not endorsing this site, it's simply a resource to get some ideas from)

:palm: Can we NOT turn this into yet another gun control thread, please? We've already got other threads for that.

Of course! If he wants to pop some punkass Bloods, he'll need a 9mm fo sho. And if he wants to shoot animals, we need to know so we can all guilt trip him and post how animals should get guns too or some shit.

@ the OP:
You're in the right ballpark by getting a .22 first, especially for target shooting. I have one myself, but my father keeps it (so it's practically his, since I no longer live at home, and haven't for some time). It was a gold trigger...something or other. Can't even remember. Browning maybe? It worked well when spot-lighting rabbits

Yes. I just want to know what kind of rifle to get for target shooting. I am all for gun control. I just don't want to talk about it here.

I'm not talking about the entire issue of gun control, I am just asking the OP why he wants to own a kind of rifle, but thinks a military rifle should be banned.

Hell no. Those things are crap, they had problems back down about exploding in people's faces and some others. And a 100 years later, I doubt they are any better.

Then why not get a bow and some arrows instead? They're probably cheaper, they hit targets just as well, and they don't have the negative stigma guns have.

I suggest a Lee-Enfield (AKA SMLE), Mosin-Nagant, M1 Garand or a K98. All of them are strong and reliable.

I thought about that. But believe it or not, they are not cheaper. Actually wooden bows, I have yet to find. Compound bows are expensive. Plus I like some guns. Simple as that.

I don't know anything about gun-control laws, the price of weapons or avilable weapons in Washington State (let alone the US), but here are a few ideas...

If you want US Army rifles, the M1903 is nice... but hard to find. If you can find a gunsmith who still manufactures them, then you've got a rifle.

SMLE Mk. III; very, very good bolt action rifle from what I know. Even when the SMLE Mk. IV came into service, veterans took the former into battle because it was the better marksman's weapon.

I take it you don't want German weapons...?

Hell I grew up with a Nagant, it was the only thing I had because of the embargo. She was like the Ak of the bolt action world, never exploded on me.
