Campbell Newman has set some kind of record I'm sure.

He's not the first to be unseated from the position of Leader. John Howard for instance (the longest serving Aus PM, for those who don't know) lost his seat from the position of Prime Minister, in 2007.

But Newman was chosen as state leader of his party before he was even elected. That can't happen anywhere but Queensland, so that narrows the field considerably. Then after one term he lost his seat ... and remained the party leader.

That's some weird shit isn't it? Some kind of record?

And it makes me wonder whether maybe the Chief Minister of the NT has a point. He remains chief minister whatever his party caucus says, up until the day the chamber votes No Confidence in him as CM. Abbott is wrong: the people do not choose their leader, they choose local members who support the offered leader. Choosing a leader is a delegated authority, and it's not delegated to any party. It's delegated by the voters, to the parliament (state or federal).

The "privatize government assets" option is particularly dumb because you can only do it once. When the asset is a viable business like electricity generation or telecoms, which was returning profits to the government budget, it's double-dumb to sell it.

Privatising government assets is stupid.

The longest serving Australian PM was Robert Menzies, not John Howard. Any Australian interested in politics should know that.

pretty sure we don't have tarantulas in straya. we do have their close cousin, though, the bird eating spider

you don't find those in houses though. pretty sure.

Which is why I hope Abbott wins. Turnbull will still be promulgating the same IPA wish-list policies designed to stratify Australia into a society of haves and have-nots, he'll just do it in a much savvier fashion.

I don't know what to think. I for one like Turnbull and I'd prefer him as PM over Abbott.

At the same time, I find this leadership stuff ridiculous. How quickly are we gonna get rid of leaders from now on. How is anything going to get done in this political environment of one term governments and frequent leadership coups.
