Well to be honest, Australia is more like the United Kingdom, in the sense that each state acts as if they were a sovereign country protecting themselves from outside forces, i.e. Strict quarantine by Western Australia. I suppose we are a federation, but still...

That's nothing like the United Kingdom mate. They don't have states and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have minimal autonomy, particularly wales. Nothing on the scale of Australia mate.

Well I am, and ironically enough through my Irish side patrillineally. It's really really really distantly related, but through Brian Boru (Where the O'Briens descend from), his daughter married the King of Scotland and their something greats granddaughter Matilda Dunkeld married the English King Henry I and her daughter was Empress Matilda of the Holy Roman Empire. Her son was Henry II and her Grandsons included Richard the Lionheart and King John. Then King John's son Henry III took the throne followed by Edward I, II and III. Then Richard II grandson of Edward III took the throne who was toppled by Henry IV in 1399 and succeeded by his son Henry V and then Henry VI and Edward IV contested the throne until 1471 when Edward came out on top until 1483 when Edward died and was followed by his son Edward V, but only lasted until before his coronation when Edward IV's marriage to his wife was declared invalid, leaving Edward V to be illegitimate and so his uncle Richard III took the throne. Then Henry VII took the throne and married the niece of Richard III and so began the rule of the Tudors. Next we had Henry VII's son, a crowd favourite Henry VIII who had a lot of wives...oh and he founded the Anglican Church, but meh. He was followed by his son Edward VI, but he died pretty quickly and was followed by his cousin Lady Jane Grey who lasted 9 days who was followed by his half sister Mary I who was succeeded by her sister, Elizabeth I who was succeeded by the Great-Great Grandson of Henry VII, James VI of Scotland and I of England and Ireland who was followed by Charles I who was beheaded and the English Civil War happened and then Charles II came to the throne who's brother, James II succeeded to the throne on his death. Then William III invaded with his wife, the daughter of James II, Mary. Then when they both died, Mary's sister Anne came to the throne, and in 1707 created Great Britain. On her death in 1714, James I's Great-Grandson George I of Hannover came to the throne followed by his son George II, followed by George III and then his son George IV and succeeded by his Brother William IV. William was succeeded by Queen Victoria who was succeeded by her son Edward VII, the first of house Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Then succeeded by his son George V and then his son Edward VIII until the famous divorce stuff and was succeeded by his brother George VI(Actual name being Albert) and he was succeeded by the current monarch, Elizabeth II.

You will burn for your heresy...

Well actually, I'm not really talking about the actual level of autonomy, I mean you have to remember, each country within the United Kingdom has their own local Parliament, something that politically speaking is pretty big, however, I digress, I'm just making a point that each state is different even though they're in the same country, so different in fact you'd think they were all independent of each other...

Well lucky you, you know your lineage, I have to research for years just to find out who my great great grandparents were on my mother's side... Sigh... They really should have kept journals back then... Oh well...

The Australian political system is better then the American one though: they don't even have any laws regarding political party funding.

I think its better because of how much diverse representation occurs in the Senate and each of the state's respective legislative councils, with Greens, Palmer, independents all having a say, rather than the two-party you-are-on-this-side-or-the-other.

I suppose (or hope) Australia is just going through a GWB phase.

The political landscape has been pretty underwhelming for a long time now, though.

It's been underwhelming since 2007 for some and even back to 1996 for others.

American here, I have questions concerning your country:

1. I know Australia and Russia are two different countries, but, is the opinion of Abbott regarding homosexuals reflected upon the average Australian the way Putin's anti-gay propaganda law caused violent acts towards the Russian LGBT community?

2. What are your opinion on the trade deal with China?

No. If anything, Abbott has proven to be a reactionary and has only kept his views in line with some of the primary backers of the ruling party. The government more or less treats homosexuality as if it doesn't exist rather than something which it's trying to eradicate; obviously that's not desirable but it still works out much better than the situation in other parts of the world where the government is far more open about it's intolerance.

2. What are your opinion on the trade deal with China?

Good and bad. It's difficult to predict how it will affect Australia while the transition away from manufacturing has seemingly stalled with the drop of value in the dollar.
Yes.

1. Not really. The majority of the public are for gay marriage and the rights of minorities- as a country, we are fairly moderate. You're really only more likely to find angry homophobes in outer suburbia or the rural regions, and even then if you weren't gay they'd probably find another reason to be rude - in my case, as a redhead I cop shit.

2. It will benefit us in some ways- most notably the attainment of Most Favoured Nation, along with countries like Russia and the USA, which improves our trade, but I dislike a few of its ideas. Additionally, China's economy is shaky at the moment due to the bubble they had bursting, which puts our economy more at risk the more heavily we tie ourselves to China.

Common consensus is favorable to same-sex marriage. It's just that Abbott refuses to do anything about it and if I may interject, dare I say same-sex marriage isn't the biggest problem for the average voter.

A Crosby Textor poll, commissioned by Australian Marriage Equality, has found that 72 per cent of Australians want same-sex marriage legalised, while 77 per cent think Coalition MPs should be granted a conscience vote.

I don't know enough about the free trade deal to form an overall opinion. Initially I say its good because it allows our agriculture to really take off in the Chinese market. For example one of my friends will make lots of dosh thanks to an export of beef to the Chinese market.
