Unification will be economically crippling in the short run. Assuming that everything somehow works out, however, I can see North Korea's mineral resources (worth up to estimated $5 trillion) adding greatly to a United Korea's prosperity. And think about the combined military capabilities! The North's special forces and cyber warfare divisions are superior to those of the US, and the South could bring substantial technology. Imagine a united Korean crusade into China.

It might have started that way but SK. makes plenty of weapon systems. And NK. while not really into manufacturing high tech weapons, is advanced when it comes to missile technology. Nukes and then they have Nukes. NK. does not trust China. Generally, the same for SK. SK. while a US ally and while they get along with the US does not altogether trust US. And both Koreas are wary of Japan.
