Actually (as far as we can tell), Aristotle was the first to give solid evidence that the Earth is round, and the Earth's circumference was calculated by Eratosthenes around 240 BCE. Sailors may have been the first to suggest it, by observing the different horizons one could see depending on if they were in the crows nest or not, but it would be a stretch to say sailors "discovered" the Earth was round.

If I re-call when Christopher Columbus was still alive and people still believed the non sense that the earth was flat he spoke to Spain's king and qeen at that time which 8/10 were religious people and they thought the earth was flat and not round.

Humans are animals first and for most. Humans actually share a lot of things with apes and some other animals as well. I choose to see the reason we have these similarities in us between these animals is because in the begging of time we all evolved from one common ancestor.
