The NSG Peace Prize Committee presents
The Fifth Edition of the

NationStates General

PEACE PRIZE

- Year 2014 -

PROCLAMATION
The NationStates General Peace Prize Committee,
having taken into account the results of the proceedings, presents the

Pro-Democracy Campaigners of Hong Kong

with the Fifth Edition of the NationStates General Peace Prize - Year 2014.

The Prize is awarded them "for their peaceful campaign for democracy, a right which many people in the world take for granted. They're campaigning for free elections in Hong Kong that have been promised by the Chinese Government for years. Some of the campaigners have been arrested for protesting peacefully, and are being threatened with violence by the police forces. This is an unacceptable fact. Many of these are students who are risking failing their university courses for the sake of their country. Democracy is a human right to which all human beings should have access."

the Chair of the Committee
Risottia

PROCEEDINGS

Just like last year, it's time for the NSG PEACE PRIZE! And this year we won't be late.
Every one of us will be able to nominate a single RL individual, or a single RL organization, which deserves to be honoured for the extraordinary contribution given to the cause of human rights and/or peace. Please explain summarily what the contribution is. Take a peep at the proceedings of the previous editions for ideas.
Also inanimated objects are eligible, see rules below.

for the Committee, Risottia (Chair)

NOTES & RULES

ABOUT THE NOMINATIONS PHASE:
  • The nominations phase is now CLOSED.
  • Every single nomination will have to be supported by at least 5 NSGers to pass to the next stage - poll between the 10 most supported nominations. ...if less than 10 candidates will have reached 5 nominations, I'll try to include in the final poll also those who got 4, or eventually 3, nominations only.
  • REAL LIFE individuals, REAL LIFE organizations. No NS Nations, groups of NS Nations, or otherwise fictional nominees.
  • PEOPLE must be ALIVE at the moment of the nomination. ORGANIZATIONS must be ACTIVE at the moment of the nomination.
  • INANIMATED OBJECTS accepted also, provided they are single, physical objects still existing at the moment of the nomination. As a guideline, it should be something eligible as UNESCO World Heritage (material or immaterial).
  • ALWAYS provide a good explanation of the contribute your nominee has given.
  • ONLY ONE nomination per NSGer, please. THIS INCLUDES SUPPORTING OTHER NOMINATIONS: if you already nominated someone you cannot support someone else's nomination. You can retire a nomination/support you previously made/gave (I'd prefer you didn't though, because the thread would become a mess!). And no, you can't support more than one nomination. I thought it was clear.
  • Note: If you aren't submitting a new nomination, and are instead going to support someone that has already been nominated, be sure to check the WHOLE nomination list.
  • Please, campaign for/against nominees just in the POLL phase.
  • NO NOMINATIONS VIA TG WILL BE ACCEPTED. ONLY POSTS IN THIS THREAD.
  • Previous winners of the prize cannot be nominated.
  • Support by puppet nations - identified as such by NS mods - will be considered void.

Note: considering how some people are evidently NOT reading the rules above, the committee will consider as void the posts with double nominations or supports.

ABOUT THE POLL PHASE:
  • The poll is now OPEN.
  • YES you can change your vote in the poll.
  • NO you can't vote for more than one candidate.
  • NO you don't have necessarily to vote for the same candidate you nominated.
  • YES you can campaign for/against candidates ON THIS THREAD DURING THE POLL PHASE. Just let's keep it reasonable, ok?

FINAL POLL BETWEEN:
  • Pro-Democracy Campaigners of Hong Kong (organisation, PR China)
4 nominations: Bandwagon, Republic of Coldwater, The Grim Reaper, Korea and japan
  • Pope Francis - Jorge Mario Bergoglio (individual, Vatican)
7 nominations: Agritum, Esternial, The Klishi Islands, Cheestan, Solaray, Wolfmanne, Calimera II
  • The French government (organisation, France)
    3 nominations: Murkwood, Ainin, Sjalhaven
  • International Committee of the Blue Shield (organisation, multinational)
4 nominations:The Archregimancy, Lenciland, Farnhamia, Merizoc

NOMINATIONS LIST

  • Pro-Democracy Campaigners of Hong Kong (organisation, PR China)
"for they are campaigning peacefully for democracy, a right which many of us take for granted. He is campaigning for free elections in Hong Kong that have been promised by the Chinese Government for years. Hong Kong has never had universal suffrage like most nations have. Some of these people have been arrested for peacefully protesting and are being threatened by violence from police forces. This is an unacceptable fact. Many of these are students who are risking failing their university courses for the sake of their country. Democracy is a human right that all human beings should have access to."
    (motivation redacted by the Committee)
4 nominations: Bandwagon, Republic of Coldwater, The Grim Reaper, Korea and japan

  • Pope Francis - Jorge Mario Bergoglio (individual, Vatican)
"for being the first pope in recent times to make an all out stand for the safety of immigrants in the Mediterranean, trying to spread peace with action and not just words, preaching for respect and help for the poor and dispossessed, taking some significant actions against child abusing-clergy and making Traditionalist Catholics worldwide bash their heads in anger."
7 nominations: Agritum, Esternial, The Klishi Islands, Cheestan, Solaray, Wolfmanne, Calimera II

  • The Fourteenth Dalai Lama - Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso (individual, PR China/India)
"for his work in promoting global peace and compassion. He has strived for democracy, religious harmony, and non-violence, and the preservation of Tibetan Buddhist culture. As the figurehead of one of the largest religions in the world, the Dalai Lama has stressed the need for cooperation and kindness between cultures, something that is in short supply today. He has strongly condemned religious violence, such as jihad, and the massacres of Muslims by Buddhists in Myanmar, and this message of peace carries far."
    0 nominations: (Merizoc retired support)

  • The French government (organisation, France)
"for their actions in Mali and the Central Africa Republic. Because of their quick action, jihadists in Mali and a possible genocide in the Central Africa Republic was stopped."
    "examples include:
Operation Serval, which helped oust an Islamist insurgency in the north of Mali that occurred subsequent to political turmoil in the country. The mission helped eliminate the group that was causing one of the largest humanitarian crises faced by that region and helped bring back peace and close a dark chapter of Malian history
Intervention in the Central African Republic, a peacekeeping operation by the French Armed Forces that disarmed several dangerous Christian and Muslim militias that threatened to bring the country into severe sectarian violence, or, according to some news reports of the time, even genocide.
Participation in the Coalition strikes against ISIS, in which French warplanes, as part of an international coalition, bombed ISIS positions in support of Iraqi and Kurdish ground movements against the bloody and cruel terrorist group."
    3 nominations: Murkwood, Ainin, Sjalhaven

  • Fethullah Gülen and the Gülen Movement (individual, Turkey and organisation, multinational)
"for advocating and spreading a modern, Western-oriented, Anatolian version of Islam all over the world, standing up for democratic values and the rights of the citizens in Turkey against a corrupt tyranny government trying to turn the country into a Middle Eastern hellhole, and taking a clear stance against Islamic terrorism and extremism."
    1 nomination: Gezi Park

  • Vian Dakhil (individual, Iraq)
"for her advocacy on behalf of the Yezidi people. As the sole Yezidi member of the Iraqi Parliament, Dakhil brought international attention upon the plight of her people with a moving speech in the Iraqi Parliament that exposed the horrific truths of the Islamic State’s genocide against the Yezidi, and called for intervention “in the name of humanity, to save us.” In the ensuing international intervention, she further volunteered to help relief efforts on Mt. Sinjar, and was injured when an aid helicopter she was on crashed. Nonetheless, she has continued to advocate tirelessly around the world for both short-term relief and long-term security for the Yezidi people. Dakhil has talked about atrocities that badly needed talking about; she has acted when action needed to be taken, to the extent that her own life was endangered; and she continues to work towards a brighter future for an oppressed minority."
    1 nomination: Angleter

  • It’s a Girl Action Campaign (organisation, multinational)
"This project came out of the documentary It's a girl: The Three Deadliest Words in the World, which showcases gendercide in countries like India and China, and what this practice has done to the population and attitudes towards the females of these countries. Although the documentary came out in 2012, the initiative it gave birth to is, still today, striving to make a change in both China and India and around the world, to change attitudes towards females and achieving it peacefully."
    1 nomination: Nanatsu no Tsuki

  • Alan Henning (individual, UK)
"Alan is a peaceful, selfless man who left his family and his job as a taxi driver in the UK to drive in a convoy all the way to Syria with his Muslim colleagues and friends to help those most in need. When he was taken he was driving an ambulance full of food and water to be handed out to anyone in need. His purpose for being there was no more and no less. This was an act of sheer compassion."
2 nominations: L Ron Cupboard, Yellow Yellow Red
(the nominee was still alive at the time of the nomination)

  • International Committee of the Blue Shield (organisation, multinational)
"The Blue Shield is the cultural equivalent of the Red Cross. It is the protective emblem specified in the 1954 Hague Convention (Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict) for marking cultural sites to give them protection from attack in the event of armed conflict. The Blue Shield network consists of organizations dealing with museums, archives, audiovisual supports, libraries, as well as monuments and sites.
In a period where cultural heritage is under considerable threat from war - as shown by (among other examples) the wanton destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and Iraq by most sides in the overlapping conflicts - those heritage professionals who risk their lives to at least try and save our global cultural heritage for future generations deserve some form of recognition even if the nature of their work means they're not always successful."
4 nominations:The Archregimancy, Lenciland, Farnhamia, Merizoc

  • Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (organisation, multinational)
"for their work in trying to help Third-world nations with medical issues and their bravery in going to dangerous places and taking any patient, regardless of politics. I would especially like to mention their work recently with the Ebola patients in Africa."
    1 nomination:Neutraligon

  • Dennis Rodmen (individual, ???)
    1 nomination: Humo
"for his great effort to help improve diplomacy with North Korea."
NOMINATION SUSPENDED FOR LACK OF REFERENCES (country of origin not specified, insufficient details)

  • National Right to Life Committee (organisation, ???)
    1 nomination: Greater Weselton
"for opposing the modern evil of abortion. Abortion is like slavery was 150 years ago."
NOMINATION SUSPENDED FOR LACK OF REFERENCES (country of origin not specified, insufficient details)

  • Ron Paul (individual, ???)
    1 nomination: The Liberated Territories
"for helping fight the forces of statism home and abroad."
NOMINATION REJECTED FOR IRRELEVANCE OF MOTIVATION TO THE PURPOSE OF THE PRIZE (also lacking country of origin)

  • Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (individual, Iraq)
    1 nomination: Nazis in Space
"as a laudable individual whose efforts to end the ethnic violence in the near east by way of establishing a large, monoethnic and more specifically, pan-arabic state featuring a widely shared consensus of spiritual, social and political values are furthering the cause of peace on Earth, achieved via the elimination of competing peoples, ideologies and organisations. His tireless efforts to bring forth the future he dreams of, and his remarkable success in terms of territorial and media presence show him to be a formidable human being not only capable of talking the talk, but also of walking the walk."
NOMINATION REJECTED FOR INCOMPATIBILITY (genocide being antithetical to the purpose of the Prize)

Do try and provide an explanation about their contribution to the cause of peace and human rights.

If you can.

Skappola wrote:Can I nominate political cartoon Obama? I feel his contributions to society far outweigh the real thing.

I doubt that. It can considered to be both a fictional character and an inanimated object uneligible as UNESCO heritage.

Well, that's too bad. He's an animate object in the hearts of all who love him, though. :p

Nanatsu no Tsuki wrote:I think this year I'm going with Malala Yousafzai, the 16 year old Pakistani girl that survived a Taliban assassination attempt.

Her call for better education opportunities in her native Pakistan inspired thousands to sign petitions calling for her to win the Nobel.

Yousafzai now lives in England and continues to campaign for human rights through her own Malala Fund. She was nominated by Norwegian lawmakers Magne Rommetveit and Freddy de Ruiter.

Wasn't she the winner for 2012? No, 2013

Unless I'm misunderstanding the article, she's one of the nominees for this year.

The article is about the Nobel Peace Prize. This is the NSG Peace Prize, which Malala Yousafzai won previously and thus cannot be nominated for again.

I'm sorry. I didn't remember Malala winning in a previous contest.

Ok, I'll try this again. Hopefully, this hasn't been nominated in other years.

I think I'll nominate It’s a Girl Action Campaign, and here's my reasoning for it. This project came out of the documentary It's a girl: The Three Deadliest Words in the World, which showcases gendercide in countries like India and China, and what this practice has done to the population and attitudes towards the females of these countries.

Although the documentary came out in 2012, the initiative it gave birth to is, still today, striving to make a change in both China and India and around the world, to change attitudes towards females and achieving it peacefully.

I thought about nominating Project Bhageerathi but I can't find much information on it other than that it strives to change the lives of over 300 underprivileged children in the Varanasi province of India. Also, I don't know if the initiative is still in effect since it was launched, IIRC, in 2009. So I shan't.
