The NationStates General Peace Prize Committee,
having taken into account the results of the proceedings, presents the

Pro-Democracy Campaigners of Hong Kong

with the Fifth Edition of the NationStates General Peace Prize - Year 2014.

The Prize is awarded them "for their peaceful campaign for democracy, a right which many people in the world take for granted. They're campaigning for free elections in Hong Kong that have been promised by the Chinese Government for years. Some of the campaigners have been arrested for protesting peacefully, and are being threatened with violence by the police forces. This is an unacceptable fact. Many of these are students who are risking failing their university courses for the sake of their country. Democracy is a human right to which all human beings should have access."

Just like last year, it's time for the NSG PEACE PRIZE! And this year we won't be late.
Every one of us will be able to nominate a single RL individual, or a single RL organization, which deserves to be honoured for the extraordinary contribution given to the cause of human rights and/or peace. Please explain summarily what the contribution is. Take a peep at the proceedings of the previous editions for ideas.
Also inanimated objects are eligible, see rules below.

NOTES & RULES

ABOUT THE NOMINATIONS PHASE:

• The nominations phase is now CLOSED.
• Every single nomination will have to be supported by at least 5 NSGers to pass to the next stage - poll between the 10 most supported nominations. ...if less than 10 candidates will have reached 5 nominations, I'll try to include in the final poll also those who got 4, or eventually 3, nominations only.
• REAL LIFE individuals, REAL LIFE organizations. No NS Nations, groups of NS Nations, or otherwise fictional nominees.
• PEOPLE must be ALIVE at the moment of the nomination. ORGANIZATIONS must be ACTIVE at the moment of the nomination.
• INANIMATED OBJECTS accepted also, provided they are single, physical objects still existing at the moment of the nomination. As a guideline, it should be something eligible as UNESCO World Heritage (material or immaterial).
• ALWAYS provide a good explanation of the contribute your nominee has given.
• ONLY ONE nomination per NSGer, please. THIS INCLUDES SUPPORTING OTHER NOMINATIONS: if you already nominated someone you cannot support someone else's nomination. You can retire a nomination/support you previously made/gave (I'd prefer you didn't though, because the thread would become a mess!). And no, you can't support more than one nomination. I thought it was clear.
• Note: If you aren't submitting a new nomination, and are instead going to support someone that has already been nominated, be sure to check the WHOLE nomination list.
• Please, campaign for/against nominees just in the POLL phase.
• NO NOMINATIONS VIA TG WILL BE ACCEPTED. ONLY POSTS IN THIS THREAD.
• Previous winners of the prize cannot be nominated.

  "for his work in promoting global peace and compassion. He has strived for democracy, religious harmony, and non-violence, and the preservation of Tibetan Buddhist culture. As the figurehead of one of the largest religions in the world, the Dalai Lama has stressed the need for cooperation and kindness between cultures, something that is in short supply today. He has strongly condemned religious violence, such as jihad, and the massacres of Muslims by Buddhists in Myanmar, and this message of peace carries far."

  "for their actions in Mali and the Central Africa Republic. Because of their quick action, jihadists in Mali and a possible genocide in the Central Africa Republic was stopped."

• Vian Dakhil (individual, Iraq)
  "for her advocacy on behalf of the Yezidi people. As the sole Yezidi member of the Iraqi Parliament, Dakhil brought international attention upon the plight of her people with a moving speech in the Iraqi Parliament that exposed the horrific truths of the Islamic State’s genocide against the Yezidi, and called for intervention “in the name of humanity, to save us.” In the ensuing international intervention, she further volunteered to help relief efforts on Mt. Sinjar, and was injured when an aid helicopter she was on crashed. Nonetheless, she has continued to advocate tirelessly around the world for both short-term relief and long-term security for the Yezidi people. Dakhil has talked about atrocities that badly needed talking about; she has acted when action needed to be taken, to the extent that her own life was endangered; and she continues to work towards a brighter future for an oppressed minority."

  "This project came out of the documentary It's a girl: The Three Deadliest Words in the World, which showcases gendercide in countries like India and China, and what this practice has done to the population and attitudes towards the females of these countries. Although the documentary came out in 2012, the initiative it gave birth to is, still today, striving to make a change in both China and India and around the world, to change attitudes towards females and achieving it peacefully."

  "Alan is a peaceful, selfless man who left his family and his job as a taxi driver in the UK to drive in a convoy all the way to Syria with his Muslim colleagues and friends to help those most in need. When he was taken he was driving an ambulance full of food and water to be handed out to anyone in need. His purpose for being there was no more and no less. This was an act of sheer compassion."

• International Committee of the Blue Shield (organisation, multinational)
  "The Blue Shield is the cultural equivalent of the Red Cross. It is the protective emblem specified in the 1954 Hague Convention (Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict) for marking cultural sites to give them protection from attack in the event of armed conflict. The Blue Shield network consists of organizations dealing with museums, archives, audiovisual supports, libraries, as well as monuments and sites.
  In a period where cultural heritage is under considerable threat from war - as shown by (among other examples) the wanton destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and Iraq by most sides in the overlapping conflicts - those heritage professionals who risk their lives to at least try and save our global cultural heritage for future generations deserve some form of recognition even if the nature of their work means they're not always successful."

The article is about the Nobel Peace Prize. This is the NSG Peace Prize, which Malala Yousafzai won previously and thus cannot be nominated for again.

I think I'll nominate It’s a Girl Action Campaign, and here's my reasoning for it. This project came out of the documentary It's a girl: The Three Deadliest Words in the World, which showcases gendercide in countries like India and China, and what this practice has done to the population and attitudes towards the females of these countries.

I thought about nominating Project Bhageerathi but I can't find much information on it other than that it strives to change the lives of over 300 underprivileged children in the Varanasi province of India. Also, I don't know if the initiative is still in effect since it was launched, IIRC, in 2009. So I shan't.

When it comes to it, I think I'll nominate Vian Dakhil, the Yazidi member of the Iraqi Parliament.

I will nominate Ron Paul for spreading his belief in weed and non-aggression.

The pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong, for standing up to Beijing tyranny.

I'm going to be nominating the Government of France, for likely preventing a genocide in the Central African Republic.

Might be nominating either the UN, or the Dalai Lama.

When the nominations are open I'll nominate the Hong Kong Democracy Campaigners.
