Because the Ebola patients have broken out of quarantined camps, and others have attacked doctors because of a distrust of Western medicine and Westerners in general, so the soldiers are needed to help keep order.

IIRC it's because most of the military personnel are there to keep medical staff and supplies safe, and to help keep things organized.

The amount of work and time required in bringing the AU up to speed here is greater than can be afforded. This issue, while minor globally, needs to be dealt with quickly.

Dealing with pathogens is not something that is easy to learn, or at least isn't quick to learn. We cannot afford to spend the required amount of time teaching them while at the same time doing nothing. So yes, we can teach the AU how to deal with this, but until they are finished being trained, someone has to be there.

The US troops in Ebola-land are a stop-gap measure in an emergency scenario. Do you need to be reminded that the US sent troops for the same in Somalia?
