He is only partially wrong. Oved is the nomic version of eved, which means slave. However, Oved does not follow the pattern he correctly identified, Oved means slave, not slaver; so Ovedyah means Slave of G-d, etc.

When the base word is a verb XaYaZ, then XoYeZ = XYZing or XYZer. I guessed the rule when the base word is a noun XeYeZ.
Servant and slave I believe are the same thing in the Torah.

You know what makes me scratch my head? Those science fiction settings where religion is all but extinct. Not only is that unrealistic, since religion (especially Judaism) has proven to be more enduring over the years, but surely some other faith would arise between now and the sci fi era. I am annoyed by this not because I worry "_{where are the jews? where they gone?}" whenever I read a science fiction novel like that. Surely not. I especially hate it when lack of religion is presented as a good thing.

Related to this are dystopias like 1984 that have outlawed religion but Jews still exist as an ethnicity. Ender's Game had that too. I don't know what to think about that.

I guess outer party members, and to an extent presumably inner-party members are denied religion simply because it takes away from the cultic "worship" of big brother, and all the other public rituals they do in the book.

I would argue that the real reason is something somewhat related-religion gives identity and community, but it can also divide people, as well as serve as meeting places for dissension, none of which are favorable to the Party. It's one thing to have the people divided upon atomized lines of suspicion, but it's another for that suspicion and hatred to be based upon tangible group identity and principle.

My mother once took me to a Morrocan Jewish restaurant known as Darna's in Jerusalem and she said "these are the Jews you can marry."

My mom makes an exception for Sephardi Jews in her otherwise kinda antisemitic worldview because she's a major mediterraneanist. See, my mom thinks the original Jews were "Mediterranean people" but thinks modern ashkenazim are Slavic imposters. So really her view on many jews isn't really antisemitic as much as anti Slavic. In case you all don't know, my mom divides the world into a few races. Nordic (or white), Slavic, Mediterranean, East Asian, Black, Native American and Dravidian. She ranks the races in a hierarchy of

Erev Succos is on a Friday. Hoshannah Rabbah is on a Friday. First and last day of Chanukah is on a Friday. PURIM IS ON A FRIDAY, Erev Pesach is on Shabbos/Saturday, Erev Shavous is on a Sunday, Shivah Asar b'Tammuz and Tisha B'Av are on Sundays (Not happy days but still), and Labour day in 2021 falls out on Erev Rosh Hashanah.

In other words, if you think you're having extra days off from work/school, boy are you wrong.

That's messed up. I might be a proud Polish-American, but I'm not an imposter. And the Dravidians being at the bottom of your mom's worldview is... well, I don't know, but it reminds me of the old linguistic theory of Indo-Aryans.

Recently (in the last few months) learned that a side of my maternal family I thought was German was actually part Ashkenazi, thanks to my uncle's research into my family tree.

Not sure what to do with this information, but I guess when they immigrated, they converted to Christianity and simply called themselves German. Wish I could've learned more about the Jewish side and their history.

This question is one I have wanted to ask for a long time, about the status of Jews and what Judaism actually means to different people both inside and outside the Jewish circle. It has been debated with strong feelings from people on both sides: arguing both that Jews are a race, and those who claim Jews are not a race but something else. As above, many people do not follow Judaism (the religion) but may still identify themselves as Jewish when asked.
