interestingly enough our local jew paper had an ask the rabbi column on this issue this week:

"Dear Rabbi,

I’m an ultra-Orthodox man who will not sit next to a woman on an airplane. After boarding a flight recently I politely asked that a woman next to me move her seat to accommodate my religious obligations. The woman refused and the flight was delayed. Airline security was called, and I was threatened with being removed from the flight and being blocked from flying in the future by being assigned to the no-fly list.

I need to fly to see my family and to conduct my business. I feel that people are misunderstanding my religious needs and discriminating against me. What should I do?

Misunderstood in Monsey

Dear Misunderstood,

Unfortunately it appears that nobody misunderstands your intention to discriminate against others based on gender. In America and most of the world, segregation or the denial of civil rights based on race or gender or sexual orientation no longer is condoned. That being said, you have three options to choose from.

You can live apart from the world in a self-imposed ghetto with other like-minded people, and continue to practice your gender segregation together. Or you can go out to the public sphere with your current attitudes and continue to clash with the people around you. Or you can modify your beliefs and behaviors and no longer practice segregation, discrimination, and the denial of civil rights based on gender. It’s up to you to decide how to live your life."

My Rabbi was talking about people after the fast:
"So it's over at 8:05, when should we eat... 8:07?"
"Nope, 8:05"
"Maybe wait for the evening prayer, 8:20?"
"Nope, 8:05"
"8:06?"

He is. He can't honor the fast due to medical concerns. He seemed pretty upset to discuss it with me.

Some people maintain a lighter diet if their health issues prevent them from fully fasting...
If the health issues are more moderate they eat and drink in extremely small amounts.

You know, thinking about it... I don't recall seeing him eat anything at lunch. I remember him saying that he would eat (we had begun talking about our fasting programs once he found out I was Orthodox - he approved of my faith). So I imagine that he had a light breakfast and sustained himself on water only for the day.

Lol! Yeah. He and I (just like you, Benuty, and I) get along great. We haven't really delved into faith but after the fasting conversation it was clear he was interested. I don't usually bring faith or politics or anything up with people outside of NSG, so it'll be a treat if he does probe. Today wasn't the day for a discussion though. He was clearly elsewhere in his mindset.

He has told me that, being Orthodox, I should make it my mission in life to visit Israel. He asked, "how can you honor Jesus if you don't visit the place that calls itself his home*" He made a very fair point. So.... I'm thinking that you and I should arrange a trip next year.

*Which, upon reflection right now, suggests that he is not a zionist and, at least, sympathizes with the Orthodox and Conservative Jews

Next year, might actually be a viable time to arrange a trip to Israel... in fact I might be studying abroad there...
