While I am neither Jewish nor Messianic, I always thought the Messianics got too much flack. I can completely understand a Jewish person wanting to convert to Christianity while still maintaining their culture and heritage.

See, you kind of pointed out the quirk with Messianic Judaism in what you said: It is more or less a conversion to Christianity. So, again, while I do appreciate the maintenance of Jewish customs and traditions, Messianic Judaism is not really Judaism so much as it is Christianity.

Messianic Judaism is not Judaism. You can be Jewish and adhere to Messianic Judaism, but I never would view it as a valid form of Judaism. Messianic Judaism is only really 50/60 years old from what I've seen (excluding Hebrew Christianity)

Most rabbis when you tell them you wish to become Jewish actually ask you if you believe in Jesus Christ because of how problematic its gotten. Hell, even my father asked me when I did a formal conversion process just to be on the safe side.

On a slightly lighter but still somewhat solemn note, I found myself - appropriately enough for Passover but not intentionally - walking around Budapest's Jewish Quarter on Tuesday of this past week. The Great Synagogue was closed (how dare Budapest's Jewish community honour one of the most important religious festivals of the year when I'm in town!), but I was pleasantly surprised at how clearly vibrant and active the city's Jewish community is 80 years after the terrible events of 1944-45.

The old Jewish Quarter (which covers a much larger area than the '44-'45 ghetto) is now an odd juxtaposition of Jewish heritage, broader Hungarian cultural heritage, and Budapest's party district - it's slightly odd seeing a fairly full-on nightlife district interspersed with kosher supermarkets, Hungarian-Hebrew schools, Holocaust memorials, the Liszt Academy, and an old church or two; but somehow it works. Not sure I'd want to be strolling through at 1:00 am on a Friday-Saturday night, though. The Orthodox Synagogue is right on the same street as the city's most famous bar complex, which must make for an odd Shabbat.

Believing in christ kinda says Christian in pretty large letters. Folks can still have matzohball soup and eat brisket on passover without being jewish.

The only way to really be messianic and Jewish is to believe the late Lubavitche Rebbe is the Messiah. They get all the benefits of Halakha, and avoid (at least for a century or two) the problem of the nineteenth part of the Amidah.

I defer to your view on the Jewish Sabbath, of course; I claim no expertise. If it works, it works.

And I think you would enjoy Budapest - and generally as a city, not just for the surprisingly vibrant Jewish community.

I don't think you even have to do much to become a Messianic Jew, nothing along the lines of what you have to do to convert to actual Judaism.

Jes!

For a while, I didn't wear one because i was busy formally converting (and broke). You see, my father is Jewish, meaning my bloodline wasn't from my mother. I decided to just order one. The area I live in only has one synagogue, which is reform, which has Shabbat services only once per month, so its not really something big.

I plan on wearing it when I get it most of the time to signify that I am Jewish. I tend to need reminders of who I am so I can keep my mind on G-d.

(I'd try to stay on track here and speak in Esperanto for now on, we have our own thread lol)

That was a good point, so I am replying here.

That is cool! I think most synagogues provide kippahs for free, though I am not sure how it works for Reform ones. Is yours customized?

Oh, and have you had a b'nai mitzvah and/or made Aliyah (understandably not the latter if you planned on visiting recently)?

I don't usually have services at mine.

Did not have my bars mitzvah, my father is Jewish but irreligious but later on he sponsored my formal conversion as he was qualified to be a Orthodox rabbi.

Grew up sorta Jewish. To be fair, the conversion was to be more on a safe side as while I grew up part of my life with him, he is not my biological father (however talking to my paternal grandmother has lead me to believe he is Jewish ethnically)

Big thing was I grew up with a Jewish father around when I was 12 but at that time it wasn't my main idea. Around when I got older, I was interested because something drew me to it.

Every so often I go on tangents to check out religions and learn about them, but I usually will always come back to Judaism since its the only thing that makes sense to me. But I like to play the argument so I can see how it works.

Yeah, plan on wearing a Kippah around so I can signify that I am Jewish though. I like having reminders about G-d and to remember there is a G-d more wise and intellectual than me. Just not plausible as I hardly attend synagogue services due my location.

Not very close, but then I eat a lot of salads and don't eat bread anymore. The hardest part is that kosher for passover food that are not home cooked tastes like cardboard.

Illegality doesn't curb certain sects from attempting to smuggle animals on the grounds of the Mount and sacrificing. As was the case with a failed smuggling operation involving goats for Pesach.

i never was a big fan of eating salads. I always get picky, Caesar salads are alright but most others ick me. I might have to simmer down on bread overall even outside of passover simply because I usually eat bread freely and happily, forgetting that its probably contributing to my health problems.
