A Catholic priest, a Protestant minister, and a Jewish rabbi were discussing when life begins.
"Life begins," said the priest, "at the moment of fertilization. That is when God instills the spark of life into the fetus."
"We believe," said the minister, "that life begins at birth, because that is when the baby becomes an individual and is capable of making its own decisions and must learn about sin."
"You're both wrong," said the rabbi, as the rebbitzen has told me "Life begins when the children have graduated from college and moved out of the house."

I know no one likes the guy who spoils the joke with facts, but I heard the soul enters the body within 40 days of fertilization.
Needless to say, yeah, life starts when everyone gets married and has a "gantze mishpacha."
It seems Orthodox Jewish families are usually big, which would explain the nice amount of minivans in my area.

You are right, nobody likes the guy who kills a joke.
But your post got me thinking about the number 40.
40 is a pretty big number for us jews. 40 days and 40 nights of the flood. 40 days of clear weather before noah sent out the dove. 40 days moses's spies went into Canaan. Etc.
Why is 40 such a big number for us?

Eved = slave => Oved makes people into slaves.

Like a good many things, this view is disputed. I was always told that ensoulment occurs when a child is born and takes his or her first breath (nefesh). I believe Yehudah HaNasi placed ensoulment (neshama) at conception or birth.La xinga wrote:Just wait till you hear about 3 and 7.
What about twelve?
Forty does seem to occur with especial frequency.

He is only partially wrong. Oved is the nomic version of eved, which means slave. However, Oved does not follow the pattern he correctly identified, Oved means slave, not slaver; so Ovedyah means Slave of G-d, etc.
Eved could also mean servant, which sounds better than slave, since slavery is frowned upon these days, so servant sounds better. Being a servant of Hashem is actually good.
