You can get sick and die if you eat ill-prepared shellfish and pork. It's hardly a concern today in the western world but it was a very different story in the Levant 5,000 years ago. Just saying.

I have a question for you guys.

So, I've noticed that a lot of Jews censor the word "God", like so: G-d.

I realize why this is done, to not take God's name in vain in accordance with the commandments. However, as I understand it "God" isn't the true name of God, and that the original name of God (or at least how to pronounce it) has been lost to time (mostly because nobody wanted to utter it in vain). So is it only a matter of piety to censor the name God? Just to keep the commandment in mind? Or do you believe that saying any name of God in vain is the same as uttering the true name of God in vain?

Yes, but the shelf life of things like pork and shell-fish is way lower than that of cows, goats, or regular fish.

Today we very rarely have to deal with those issues, but back then when refrigeration wasn't invented yet, they had to be a bit more scrutinizing.

TBH, I do think that certain religions and beliefs need to catch up to the times and let go of some of their policies that were only practical or normal during the ancient times, but eh, I don't get to control what religions choose to keep or not.

In theory we do not spell out any of the names of god, whether true name or not, to avoid confusion and making people think "oh look he is a bad jew, he spelt out the name".

I think this comes from the idea of protecting the law from being misinterpreted

Not really. Many cultures, notably the United States and some Middle Eastern cultures, practice circumcission for reasons that go beyond adherence to a religious faith. A lot of it has to do with cleanliness or weird reasoning. Judaism does, however, offer consideration to goyim (Gentiles) who abide by the seven Noahide Laws, calling them ger toshav, chassid umot ha'olam, or ger tzaddik.

It has to do with the prohibition against Chillul Hashem or desecration of the name. Originally, it applied specifically to G-d's name but it soon began to apply to titles associated with G-d outside of prayer or particular situations of religious significance among Orthodox Jews. And now it frequently occurs in languages that aren't Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish, Ladino, etc.

Ethel mermania and Fahran have covered it pretty clearly, but just to add to that? The word "god" comes from a proto-Germanic word that means "deity," and is obviously not the Almighty's true name. That being said? The capitalized version has become the Almighty's de facto proper name in the English speaking world. Therefore English speaking Jews took to writing "G-d" out of respect for the prohibitions against writing the Almighty's name in full. Strictly speaking putting the "o" in there isn't prohibited but it's become the cultural norm for the above-mentioned reasons.

Anyway regarding G-d's true name. It's not entirely lost. We have the spelling in Hebrew. The problem is that traditional Hebrew had implied vowels. As in the vowels weren't written down. The native speakers would have known how words were spoken and which vowels to imply when but we do not (modern Hebrew includes written vowels).
So basically? We have the consonants of G-d's true name, but there is debate as to how vowels are applied to it. Scholars have narrowed it down to two possibilities, with most of them leaning one way over the other.

I don't particularly care about your, or anyone else's, opinion re: Israel in this thread. Because accusing Jews of disloyalty/double loyalty and implying all Jews= Israel is indeed an anti-Semitic line of questioning.

Also this thread is generally about Jewish culture and religion, and has generally been free of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict discussion. There's a dedicated thread for that. Dragging that debate in here is, at best, in poor taste.
