But really, Stalin was the best; he defended the nation against the German invaders and drove them all the way back to Berlin, although it did cost a bunch of lives.

Getting complete and total power turns people into douche bags. That is a well known fact. So while Trotsky might have been a great guy compared to Stalin, put him in a position of unlimited power, and his idealism would have faded fast.
